The tractor appears to be getting too much fuel and is producing excessive smoke and running very rough when throttle is opened (backfiring etc) the problem is somewhat alleviated when the engine is put under load. I have just purchased this tractor and do not know whether this problem has been long term or recent. I have cleaned the air filter and changed the oil in the simms fuel pump to no avail. HELP!!!!

We've seen that before, its usually one of two things, injector tip could be cause, but most likely, a return spring is broke on a plunger in the injection pump, thus fuel injetion rate is erratic. You can check this problem out by just removing the side cover of pump, and observing. One other small possibility is that a set screw loosened up on the rack to one of the plunger control arms, but you will see that if it is the case as well. As for the screw on top for the fuel setting, to get more fuel you turn the screw out, not in as in the post below. Also, this wouldn't cause it to backfire, would smoke like a chimney, but not backfire, these pumps don't push enough of a fuel load with the screw simply turned out to cause that. If you want to try to isolate the cylinder with the problem, crank the injector lines one at a time, until you find which one is the culprit. good luck.

Two things spring to my mind, first, someone may have 'tuned up' the injector pump. In front of the injector pipes on top of the pump body there is a screw and lock nut, if the screw is hardly visable above the lock nut, someone has opened it up... this screw is used to adjust the fuel output to compenste for higher elevations. Or the injector need cleaned, most injector shops can do this, the injectors are i believe the same as those used on a Fordson Major. There is a third possiblity, that dispite changing the oil in the pump (it needs to be done with every engine oil change)there is so much crud in the pump body it is not letting everything return to it's 'normal' operating position. You can alway try posying to the Nuffield forum...http://leyland.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=general

Could be punctured air pipe from the govenor part of the pump to the inlet manifold or a punctured diaphragam in the govenor. Hope this helps, Richard.
