I just bought a rototiller made in the 30's or 40's the only info i can find on it is a stamping on the chain housing that says THE GEM
it has been painted over and the origainal paint seems to be an orange. there is a name on the back flap but i can only make out manufractured by.
Any help would be great.

The Howard GEM rotovator was made by a firm started by Clifford Howard in Australia, he started up a separate company in England in 1938. I have sent you some other info by email. Bob

In reply to rototiller info--Bob/jerome.
I have a 1952 Howard Gem that I have restored to perfect working order and also have the original manual. The ' old girl ' is put to work from time to time and raises a few eyebrows when I drive down the street to our other property.
I would be interested in comunicating with other owners.
I am new to the net , so a little help may be required in communicating.
Dave

I have a gem rototiller too, and need more information on parts and pictures. It is called a H oward Rotavator made originally in West Horndon Essex, England, Serial #250A45 41 mODEL G30. It had been in fine running order until the reverse went on it. Does anyone have more info?

I, too have an ancient Howard with a "Jap" engine that's almost impossible to start. It's parked up for the last 2 years because of this. Had you much trouble with the Kohler conversion. I'ld be very interested in fitting a more modern engine or does anybody have any tips on starting the old Jap.
Thanks

Gerry

I have owned a Howard Gem since 1970. Have rebuilt it once and have built a couple of others in the meantime and sold them. Mine is a working tiller and am in the process of looking for additional parts. The engine on mine is a 22hp Wisconsin and I do have access to some parts.

Jerome: It was made by the Howard Rotovator Co. in England and was about the very best you could get. I know the GEM was built as late as 1967, because somewhere in my stash, I have a folder for it. Howard rotovators are still being built or at least the name is being used by someone. Here in Ontario, they are wholesaled through Robert Laning and Sons. In the States, they used to have depots at Harvard Illinois and Sacramento, CA. Sorry I don't know who does the importing. Good Luck. Tom
