A guy that my family is friends with has a mid 90's model long tractor 50-55 HP 4x4 with a loader on it, he wants to sell it along with about 12+ pieces of equipment for $8,000. is this a good buy? i think its a little high myself but i don't know, the tractor doesn't have many hours on it, him and the guy before that owned it just hobby farmed with it and it probably hasn't ever plowed a full day.

I have been using Longs since 1978. We have had a 360, 2 445s, and a 610. The 610 needed some engine work and one of the 445s needed a gear in the transmission. These have been the two most costly repairs other than tires. To me, the weakest part of these tractors is the hydraulics. We have had some small problems here, and they are a bit slow. Most Longs will have their share of small hyd. connection leaks and some fuel system leaks. It is common for the front main seal to leak a little, too. They are heavy built and pull well for their size. Our 610 had a loader on it, but it was 2wd. I just bought a loader tractor about 6 months ago, looked for a Long but could not find one. If you have a good source for parts, that would be a plus. I probably would have strongly considered the Long that you are looking at instead of paying over double the price for the tractor that I bought. Longs do not have a high resale value, but I believe as other tractor prices rise, Long values will not decrease as rapidly as in the past. If you are planning to keep it for a long time, this would not be a consideration. Hope this helps.

A 2360 is a newer version of a 360. It is a 35 HP tractor.

Jim, you may all ready know this but there are two higher output hydraulic pumps available for Longs. They were cheaper than the orignal replacement. If I remembe correctly they were 8 and 12 gpm. In order to use these pumps you will have to cut your intake pipe in two to extend it forward to bolt up. I usually slip a hose over the pipe and clamp it on with radiator clamp. It sure helps the front loader cycle better.

I have an older Long that is a bit tired (560, 4WD, no loader) but is still a pretty good tractor. I paid $3500 for mine. Only working instrument was oil pressure, paint was rough, rims about shot, almost no brakes.

I have a good parts place about an hour away - that might be something to check out. He is still able to get most parts for my older tractor. He used to be a dealer, but something changed recently and he doesn't carry them any more.

From what I've seen and heard from owners of the of the newer Longs, and from what I've seen for prices of alternatives, I wouldn't be too scared of $8000 for a 4WD with loader in good shape.

my uncle has a old long and his concern is the dry brakes, do they wear out fast? how difficult are they to replace?
