I just purchased an older Long tractor. the bill of sale lists tractor as a model 445 dt s/n 519553. The paint on the tractor shows it as a 460 instead of 445. I can"t find the data plate to verify the bill of sale info. the local dealer didn"t have any way to research the info from the serial number. Is there anyone out there that can confirm the model/year from the serial number?

The hood on a 445 opens from the center right side. The hood on a 460 tilts forward and the fenders are usually flat on top.

I HAVE A 445LONG.I WAS PLOWING RECENTLY AND THE ENGINE KIND OF FADED OUTA LITTLE AND JUST DIED IN ITS TRACKS. I REPLACED BOTH FUEL FILTERS,THEN I REPLACED THE LIFT PUMP WHEN I COULDNT GET FUEL TO COME THROUGH THE LAST FILTER THROUGH PRIMING. NOW WITH THE NEW LIFT PUMP I CAN GET FUEL TO THE INJECTION PUMP,BUTWHEN I TURN THE ENGINE I DONT GET ANY PRESSURE WHEN I TAKE THE INJECTOR LINES OFF OF THE PUMP.HAS ANYBODY HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM? I TOOK THE SMALL PLATE FROM THE SIDE OF THE PUMP AND IT IS TURNING WITH THE ENGINE. COULD IT BE SOMETHING FROM THAT POINT BACK?ANY INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.THANKS

Ray, I know this thread is old but I just came across it this morning 5-25-07. I see where as you own a Long 445....do I understand you to say you have 2 fuel filters? Just curious as i have had this discussion with someone recently. Thanks! Jim Frogge

When you have made sure that you are getting fuel from the tank filters and lift pump, then you can bleed air off the injection pump with the little bleeders on the injection pump control lid (where the throttle and fuel shutoff is) their are 5/16 headed turn counterclockwise one full turn and pump the lift pump until fuel comes out in a steady stream, close off and do the one close to the block, then when this is completed you can bleed the injector lines at the injector.

Start from the beginning. Make sure fuel valve at bottom of tank is completely on. Check banjo fitting as mentioned above. Check the filter screen in the manual or lift pump. You will see it if you take the top off the pump. Then bleed the filters. You still probably have air in the injection pump and lines because of the way it ran out of fuel. I have pulled these tractors to turn engine over and force out air rather than spend a lot of time bleeding lines. I have a 445 and a 360. Good Luck!

Where are you located, Ray? I am near Greensboro. The last time I changed filters, about a month ago, I used Fram; can't remember the number though. A 3166 NAPA fits them as well. I never really had much bleeding the system after changing filters, but have had the most difficult times when tractor ran out of fuel on its own. A chain and another tractor makes it easier than pushing that pump lever up and down. As far as the o rings, I change the small one but do not always change the large ones. I have had a few that were hard to seal, usually on the bottom filter.

thanks glick and jim for the reply.i think i got my oring issue straightened out.i primed it up to the inj. pump today.i took an inj. line directly loose from the pump and primed more.should fuel come from that hole or does the pressure on the injector have anything to do with that?i loosend 2 nuts on top of pump till air ceased. i had plenty of fuel in tractor when this happened. if it dont start tomorrow i will pull it like jim said.{lack of extra hands this weekend}oh yeah,im in westfield, jim. just north of king
thanks again,fellas. ill report later.

Pretty country up that way, Ray. I sold tobacco for several years in Rural Hall. If I didn"t live on family farm(fifth generation), I would consider moving to Stokes or Surry County. I would love to get out of Guilford. Sounds like you are getting there with your Long. If you pull it off, make sure your fuel stop rod is pushed in and put in high gear. Just before it starts, you will see the blue smoke roll out of the muffler. Good luck!

SUCCESS!!FINALLY, AFTER A FAILED ATTEMPT TO PULL IT OFF, ISTLL HAD NO FUEL GETTING INTO INJ. LINES.I FOUND THAT IN THE SUPPLY{?} LINE INTO THE REAR OF THE PUMP,THERE ARE VARIOUS SPRINGS AND A LITTLE PISTON.THERE WAS A BURR ON THE END OF THE LITTLE THING STOPPING IT FROM FULL TRAVEL THEREFORE NOT LETTING FUEL INTO THE INJ. LINES .THEN I PULLED IT DOWN THE ROAD AND SHE TOOK OFF. FINALLY. NOW ONE SMALL ISSUE. I TOOK THE FUEL LINKAGE LOOSE ON TOP OF THE PUMP SO NOW WIDE OPEN IT IS ABOUT 1400RPM. I BET I CAN FIX THIS WITH A SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT. THANKS EVERYBODY FOR INPUT,ESPECIALLY JIM. TAKE CARE AND THANKS AGAIN.

Old Time Exhibition in reply to ray in nc, 05-01-2006 18:08:03
Hey Ray and everyone: The Old Time Exhibition will be held in Colfax this weekend. Get off at the Sandy Ridge Rd. exit and go south about 2 miles. A sanctioned OTTPA tractor pull, old tractors, and other "goings on" will be happenin'. Hope to see you there.

Check the banjo fitting on the back side of the lift pump that the hose from the tank is connected to. Sometime trash from the tank will block this fitting just enough to cause a air bubble in the fuel system which will cause the injector pump to lose its prime.

It could be a 445 with 460 sheet metal. Thay are very close to being the same. Just minor differences. The 445 was made form 72-76. The 460 is 77-91.

Thanks for the info. The tractor would be a 445 then. Seems to be a solid tractor so far.

Thanks again!

new to the forum and new to tractors in general. I have an old long 460 whee are you all getting parts? I need the glass dome that fits over the primary fuel filter, broke mine. I ran the engine dry of fuel, bled the thing and got it running only to die again 2 hours later. Hoping this is the problem.
