You didn't happen to use ether to start it, did you? The "After quite some convincing" part of your post makes me wonder. If so, you may have broken a ring land or cracked a piston. Or, possibly that was the very reason the tractor has been sitting for some time.

i am not sure of the history and dare say i used the starting fluid carefully now there were signs of oil all over the tractor so i think thats why it was parked do you think it will be rings or piston actually can you think of anything else that could do that?

While we're talking about the troubled Leyland
BMC diesel, I have the above Nuffield (1969) which is the cousin to the Leyland (same Brittish co.)that has a cracked block x2 - between the cylinders. I need a block or info
on whether it can be successfully welded.
Any advice would be appreciated. Bower.

If there are actual droplets of oil exhausting, it won't be valves, as they aren't capable of such a volume of oil loss, so expect worn rings(seems excessive), or, more likely, a failure of the sort I mentioned earlier, sorry.

If you need engine parts for your tractor, I have them; just click on my name to send me an email.

Just to bring you guys up to speed What I found was a rag ingested by the engine ,caught up in the rings wich were worn to half their diameter to begin with .In short 4 new liners and a set of rings and it runs pretty good, no more oil bath !!!!! !!!
