I was wondering if anyone ever made a tractor with a Model A Ford 4 cylinder flat head engine? I don"t mean any truck or car conversions to tractors I"ve seen them, I mean a factory tractor or a conversion of another tractor to use a model A engine. Thanks Todd

Peru Plow works in Illinois manufactured a tractor for Sears for two years 1938 and 1939. You could buy it from sears with engine for $495 or without engine for $395. There were about 500 units built in the two year period. Even the tractor with engine had a reconditioned power plant as the last Model A engine was built in 1931.

From the records I've seen, the last A engine was built in March, 1932. 2,649 engines were made that year, and then Ford beefed up the engine and it bacame the B, and then the model C. It was similar to the A except it got good pressure oiling, larger bearings, better balancing, etc. I've seen tractors sold as new in the early 40s with Model A engines and have wondered if they were, indeed rebuilt engines, or new old-stock leftovers.

I believe the Thieman used a Ford model A engine. There is a picture of one on this website that I posted from the Cook Tractor Museum.

There were plenty of tractors that used the Ford A engine - even a few garden tractors, but the only ones I can think of at the moment are some of the Toros and Worthingtons. The Toros were often used as golf-course or landscaping tractors.

I'm not so sure about the Worthingtons. I know that the G (or one of the models anyways) at least used a Ford N-series TRACTOR engine which is different in several respects from the Model A engine. A lot of people think they look the same, but a quick comparison will show several differences.

Yes I know the difference. As I recall, the N series engines utilized a lot of Model A engine components internally. I own half a dozen Model A cars, a few Model AA trucks, and a Model T - so I'm well aware what the A engine looks like ( I also have several Ford tractors including a 2N and an 8N). I've seen many Toros with Model A engines and I've seen one Worthington.

The model A engines shared no internal components with the N-series engines. Model A"s have babbitt bearings, larger cylinders, different castings different valve-train components...etc. The n-series engine by displacement is one-half of a 239 flathead V8, but still the parts are unique to each engine. I got one of each(A, Flathead 8, 8N) and have not run across any interchangable parts between them.

I have a 1932 Worthington with a 1929 Model AA engine and a 1937 Worthington with a Model B engine. Both have the same grill, a 1932 Model A.

There was an economy tractor that used them. You could buy it with or without an engine. They used the same rear and transmission as the custom, wards, crysler tractors.

larry the custom and wards tractors used the transmission and rearend out of a dodge truck with a timken final drive attached to the ends of the rearend and fluid drive on front of the transmission...none of the economy tractors had a fluid drive.. i own a lehr big boy that was the forerunner of the wards and customs..it does not have the fluid drive or the timken final drives but the date on the transmission indicates its a 1948 production which is a lot later than the economy was produced

I think the Thieman tractors used Model A engines.
