I am rebuilding A Hercules IXA serial # 403900 engine from a 1935 Silver King. The last person in this engine was a troll! They added a rear crankshaft oil seal then bolted the bell housing on,cracking a nice round portion of the bell housing and leaving me with over .300 end play on the crank.Has anybody machined a recess to accept an oilseal? Has anybody got a way to remove the end play?
Thanks,Bill

No doubt this is a five gear IXA engine. Do you have the pan off. Some of those engines used the center main as the thrust. Which bearing are you using or is even there a thrust bearing in it?

The best I can figure is that the end play / thrust is controled by the #3 main bearing. This engine has babbitted in place upper bearing 1/2,s and replaceable bottom 1/2,s. The #3 shell has a flange on it I think that is where they controlled the end play.

The book i have is for the IXB engine,it says the end play is controlled by the rear bearing. The book shows an oil seal in a recess to hold it.I know the older engines had no seal.
