would like to know if I could run a wood splitter behind a Universal 4. How is it done? I there hydraulic pressure when the PTO is on or when the 3PTH is in its up position. Just a couple questions I hope some one can help me with. I also wanted to know what H.P. a universal 4 is ....45 or 60?

Thanks

The universal 4 diesel is about 42hp. The PTO needs engaged to drive the hydro pump.
There are hydraulic outlets on both sides of the rear hydraulic housing above the pto.
If you manualy lift the 3 point arms up and pull out and turn the knob on the upper back of the hyd. housing it will lock the arms in the up position. There is also a lever to the left and below the seat that can engage or disengage the hydraulic pump when the pto is on. I believe this needs to be kept in the rear position to keep the pump engaged.

Thanks for the reply. Are both of the hydraulic outlets for pressure or can 1 of them be used for a return line?

There are two sets of outlets; one set on each side of the hyd. housing above the pto. Each set will operate one double acting cylinder.

I want to mention the use of "hydraulic quick couplers" for this purpose. The ordinary push-in couplers are fine for intermittent duty but for applications that require a continuous flow of oil I don't think they are a good idea as there is too much restriction to the oil flow and the oil will quickly heat up in addition to being very hard on the pump. I think a "full flow" type of quick coupler is available. Just an observation.

Do you have a brand name for these "full flow" type of quick coupler?

FINALLY remembered to look into this. There are two alternative couplings: One is the Pioneer 6600 series which will reduce flow checking as will the Pioneer G949 series. More less restricted flow to prevent back pressure in your system and less heating of the oil under continuous flow conditions. Craig
