The power steering does not work. It feeds directly off the hydraulic pump. Per the manual it is supposed to have trans fluid in the housing behind the trans (differenial) where the suction pipe for the hydraulics get fluid from. Currently it has gear oil in it. The transmission also has gear oil in it. Is this correct? Can I drain the oil by removing the suction line.

It is supposed to have Hy Trans oil through out the transmission and rear end. If I remember correctly there are two drain plugs to drain entire system. Only place 90 weight gear oil is used is in both finals just inside the rear wheels. Check your filter screen inside the large area of your suction tube on right side of engine. It is held in with two bolts. These filters can be cleaned but if it has been in service for a number of years I would replace it. If rubber seal is missing on filter, look for it inside the housing. These seals sometime come off and plug the suction tube. The power steering does not feed of main hydraulic pump (front pump) but has its own pump (rear pump). If your system is the older style, P/S pump feeds off main hydraulic suction tube. When P/S pump becomes weaker it tends to starve for oil because main hyd pump is drawing oil away from it. That is why the system was changed on later models and separate container for P/S was mounted under the hood.
