Would like to know if anyone has any experience with these. What are the good points and week points for these tractors. Would they normally make a reliable farm tractor. What is their age bracket. Are they turbo or non turbo. Any info gratefully received

Try the following BBS for info.

I have a 270 Leyland - they are considered a midweight tractor but are higher in HP than most their size. We farmed tobacco with a 4-row setter, 2-row hiller, 7 foot Rotavator, and 4X4 irrigation pump for many years with two Leylands. The motors are incredibly tough and the rest of the drivetrain is bullet-proof. These tractors were designed to be used in third-world countries and developing nations (the remnants of the British Empire) so they are simple to use, easy to maintain, and tough - think of the untrained operators they would see in Kenya or the Ivory Coast or Zimbabwe.

Most parts are still available for them from Anglo-American (sponsor of BBS below) and they are easy enough to work on. Leylands were considered a poor man's tractor becasue they cost less than red, green, or blue iron but they helped make an awful lot of tobacco crops in central NC over the years. For their size, power, and price (new) they were tough to beat.

Is your 270 a turbo engine?

Thanks "Fighting suburbia in NC" for the prompt reply and the info.I really appreciate it. Your info gives me a measure of confidence. I had also heard that they were prone to jumpt out of PTO when in that operation. I'll look into this aspect a little furthur. Thanks also for the Leyland link. Hope that I can return the favour some time. - regards Mike.

It was the midwieght tractors that suffered from the pto jumping out,a mod kit was available to cure it,tractors so fitted identified easly as there is no provision for taking the hydraulics out of gear. The 285 should have an engine driven Dowty pump, the middle weights had a rear mounted pump untill the yellow tractors with Sekura cabs came out.

Thanks for the info Richard. I have picked up some useful tips on this great site. I live in Victoria Aiustralia and we don't see many Leylands here. I think I'll have a go and buy a 285. I have a D.B.995 that I've had for years and wouldn't part with. It's a great farm tractor. A 285 would give me just that extra horse power when discing or baling. Thanks for your reply Mike.
