I've got a Kohler kt17 series II in a Simplicity GTH-L garden tractor. Lately it cuts out after mowing for 30-40 minutes OR about 2 or 3 minutes after you turn the headlights on. This is obviously an ignition short, because the ignition switch is totally dead, no crank, no click, nothing, until I let it cool down for a few minutes (even 2-3 minutes is long enough) then it will start right up like nothing ever happened and run another 10 or 15 minutes until "something" heats up again and shorts the ignition. I'm guessing coil or condensor, but I'd like to know would the headlights put enough load on them to over heat either and cause an ignition short?
Thanks!

You probably have a circuit breaker beetween the ignition switch and the battery.

After things warm up, the breaker trips, and there's no "go" until it cools enough to reset.

Why does it trip? The coil and condensor are UNLIKELY to short bad enough to trip the breaker. They CAN short, but in this case, the engine would just stop, but the starter would still work, and crank the engine when you turn the key.

The breaker may trip from corroded connections right at the breaker that heat up, and actually overheat the breaker. Locate the breaker, clean the connections, and replace the breaker, if necessary.

The breaker may be tripping because of a bare wire near the engine or exhaust that shorts out.

The other likely cause is a bad electric mower clutch, if your unit uses one. The electromagnetic coil fails, and draws too much current, tripping the breaker. Replacement of the clutch coil will be needed. (How long does the engine run if you do not have the mower engaged?) This should help narrow down the problem.

I agree that it's something between the battery and ignition switch, because when it shuts down, I get nothing through the ignition switch, the lights don't even work with the switch in the ON position. And although the "time before shutdown" varies when just mowing, it ALWAYS shuts down within a couple minutes if I turn the headlights on. I've changed the starting solenoid a couple times on this tractor, and don't remember if there are any fuseable links behind the panel or not. This model doesn't have an electric mower clutch.
Thanks.

You are looking for a CIRCUIT BREAKER, not a fusible link. It will be a little rectangular box with two terminals, in the area between the starter solenoid and the ignition switch.

Ah, I think there is one down there somewhere. Not a pop out button type, more like a "heater" in a 3 phase magnetic starter, right?

The circuit breakers I am referring to look like the ones above. I am not directly familiar with your tractor, but many tractors use breakers like those pictured here.

I had a similar problem with a Kohler 12hp.
I removed the top cover to expose the flywheel & magneto. Found the wire ( ground) going to the magneto bare. Once the tractor had heated up, the bare wire came in contact with the cylinder fins. The ground not only shorted out the circuit preventing possible spark, but also grounded out the normally open seat switch which to the wiring diagram looked like the tractor was to run without anyone on the seat, so it would shut down.
