I need a starter for a Long M#510 - three cylinder diesel - tractor and was wondering if someone can lead me to a supplier that is reasonable. I'm finding them for $315 plus shipping. Just seems a little salty to me. If someone has a source I'd surely appreciate it.

Thank you,
Walt

That price posted is really good compared to what I paid for my Long 360 starter. The original starter was made in Romania and burned out. Several years ago, I was quoted about $275 for new one of those Romanian starters. The dealer also had a new Bosch for about $375. I took the Bosch. It turns faster and has not required any repair.

I bought this "used" tractor several years ago, and outside of a new battery, altenator, and fuel filter it's been a good worker. When it didn't start the other day, a properly placed tap with my hammer got it going. But that one start is all I could get. I work nights and have limited time (just weekends) to deal with problem; but as soon as I remove and inspect the starter I'll make up my mind if I'm going to have it rebuilt for $100 or buy a new one for $300. I was hoping someone on this board had a cross reference # that would be a match to a GM or a Ford. I think then I could find something that was both new and reasonable. Next week (or the week after) I'l get back to you and let you know what happened. Again - Thank you for all your help.
Walt

there are dealers all over the place. if you live in ohio, i know of a good dealer. anything for a long will hurt your wallet. but the price you said for a starter- dont seem to bad to me. (why cant you rebuild the starter ? )

That is where I am getting stuff from now they seem to have a lot for the older tractors. I was there one day and met the Long sale rep. He was asking them if the had a transmission gear for (i forget what model)because Long them self didn't have it and they did (since 1982 they said) but they had it that means a lot to me. I had mine worked on there as well they do good work and reasonable labor rate as well. I talked with the service guy one day he said they was all family owned and operated and that they are the oldest Long dealer in Ohio.
