I got this old horse model and noticed that the shaft and tines will wobble around... about 2" of slop can be had at the end of the tines. The hubs fit tight on the shaft. Knowing this isnt right, I took the rear drive apart but cant find any obvious reason for this amount of play. All the bearings look ok (or are they)?. The seals are obviously shot and need to be replaced as well. Can anyone shed some light on how to tighten this rear drive up so seals will last and gears will mesh correctly? I did notice that the 2 shims under the driveshaft endcap are worn thin and about shot. And where is a good place to get parts?

Thank You,

scott#2

i work in a autorized servive center you need to shim you tine shaft up so there is no play (not tight though)then shim the long shaft up till it has no play the long shaft it gets shimed at the back of the the bearing race (bearing race ,shims, cap) mtd has all of the parts that you will need to fix it right. just make sure that all parts move smoothly. tines should not rotate if you grab it by hand and try to turn them.

Parts for troy built can be ordered from a MTD service center (cub cadet, white, troy, yard man, etc). Some deals will repair the tiller models and stock parts. As far as the ammount of play in the rear output shafts, the only play in mine is in rotation. With the engine off and the drive in high or low gear, the tines can rotate roughly 5 degrees. Even though this tiller is 25 years old, there is no other play in the output shafts.

I am not quite sure what is causing you woble, I would check to see that the rear housing for the output shafts in secure on the drive shaft tube. When you replace the rear seals, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you remove all rust and any burrs from the shaft. When I replaced mine, I used scotchbrite and a little gear oil. It takes a little time if you have tough burrs, but it is gentile on the machine and leaves almost no abrasive residue (nice finish too). Don't bother trying to get generic seals at an auto parts store. I got the kit from a mtd deal. It had all the seals for the trans, replacement gaskets for the cover plate and output shaft plate, and sealant. Cost me about $22.

Wish you the best of luck.

Have you tried calling Troy Bilt in Troy, NY? They will give you the help you need over the phone. Might help to be near your tiller with walk around phone when you do it.

Have not had this particular problem, but the garden tractor forum had some help for my tiller problem. Be sure to use the recommended lube for the gearcase- wrong lube is the cause of lots of tiller problems.

Something I noticed now after disassembly: There is a .055" shim (.110" total) on each end of the shaft at the small end of the bearing where it goes into the race. Is this right??? It doesn't seem to serve any purpose there no matter how I look at it. The book doesnt show any shims anywhere on this assembly and if you ask me, if any shims should be on this shaft, it should go behind the large end of the bearing (before the bearing is pressed on the shaft) as it will push the bearings further off the center drive gear and make up for the sideways play. Anyone know how much sideways play should be it the shaft that the tine hubs bolt to???

Now I am totally mystified and suspect someone has been in this unit before and re assembled it wrong with the shims (that the book doesnt show) in the wrong place.

Any and all suggestions welcome here.

Thank You,

scott#2
