Hello, Folks!

I've been looking for a reasonably priced diesel tractor that has more HP than my li'l Fergie TO-20. The only thing I've been able to find in my price range is a Long 510. -mid 80's. The guy wants $3500 for it, and I can't get him to come down. It has a canopy, and runs and drives nicely...but: It needs two rear tires yesterday. The original electric system shorted out, and so it's been jury-rigged just to run and work- gauges and lights don't work, etc. Looks like it wasn't taken good care of- as it's got plenty of oil and gunk everywhere. (yet it does run and drive very nicely) AND there is a problem in the hydraulics- it lifts O-K, but the hydraulics make the back of the tractor "jump" continually. So, by now you probably think I'm totally insane for even entertaining the notion of buying this baby for $3500...uh...did I mention it runs and drives really nice? Come on guys...talk me out of it- or talk me into it! And to make matters worse, I have never set eyes on a Long before looking at this one! Comments? Suggestions? Looney-bin commitals?

Thanks for the info guys- but it pays not to jump at stuff that you're not sure of, as today I found me a Massey Ferguson 165 diesel, with good rubber and good hydraulics and the gauges even work...and no blow-by.....for $4K.

No contest!

I forgot to mention live hydraulics. I drove a TO-20 a lot during the 1950's. It was a big improvement over the earlier tractors with no hydraulics and only hand crank. But for working, the features I mentioned are super improvements over the TO-20.

It will be difficult to buy a better tractor for that same price. The hydraulic problem may be related to the lever for the depth control, an owners manual would be helpful. I doubt the hydraulic problem is serious. People pay that price for Ford 8N and you will have with the Long twice the HP, live PTO, differential lock, and powersteering.
