I have a two man chain saw that I would like to identify. This is some of the things I know about, it's red, has a 36 inch bar, gas tank sets behind the motor, it has bicycle handle bar set up with the thottle on the right side of the handle bars, and that's about it. Can anybody help me with this. I've been told it is Mall, but I was also told it was a Mercury-Diston. So at this point any help will help.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello. I saw your ad in Y.T. I have an original 4 page brochure on Mall Power tools, dated 4-50. The front page covers the 10 models of chainsaws which they manufactured. The first on the list is like yours. The model 7H. Handlebars with the throttle mounted on them. This brochure is dirty, some small tears, but it is complete. Price is US$10.00, which includes mailing to the USA or Canada. Please let me know if you are interested. Robert.

From your description, it sounds like you have a Mall saw. They were bought out by Remington, yes the gun guys! The last ones were referred to as Remington-Malls. Used to work in a saw shop while they were a lot of 2 man saws, McCullochs were yellow/black, Poulans were unpainted aluminum. Malls were reddish (maroon) and think they may have had a cream colored trim, after all this was in the late 50's. they were all one cylinder uprights, except the Mercury-Disstons which were all nice polished aluminum 2 cylinder horizontal alternate firing engines, after all they were made by an outboard motor company, and the Disston co, made the saw part, some models of the Mercury even had hand clutches on them. Very smooth running, nice saw,but very expensive to buy and repair, The Malls had a mean habit of sometimes backfiring, and with a lefthand-threaded,self pulling flywheel, often the logger would spend hours looking around the woods for a flywheel that had jumped off and ran away! 2 man chain saws were definitely hard on the help, but a step up from the cross cut saw of the earlier days.

I have a two man saw. A Mercury Diston, 12 horse power, Model #KB7-B. I would like to add a starting motor to make it an electric start instead of the rope start it has now. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Thank you
Pat

Pat, you have an antique saw, made from 1948-50, if you add an electric starter, it will ruin its originality. Besides, it would be difficult to add an electric starter, as there is no provision on the saw for doing this.
