I saw a few references to red seal engines here.. so here goes...

Well I ~was~ on vacation this week staying home to tend to the wife after some surgery, but just got called into work after our oldest piece of equipment broke down.

We do road construction, and one of the vehicles we use is a liquid asphalt distribuitor.. basically a cab / chassie truck fitted with a tank to hold emulsified ( water and liquid asphalt )asphalt. There are heat tubes in the tank and was originally heated by a deisel /fan blown pump setup. Pump also mixed the asphalt with a shaft into the tank to an adjitator.
The brand of this tanker unit is 'littleford'

The power unit mounted on the back of the tank to run the diesel blower / adjitator is a flat head 'red seal' continental engine... same vintage as our fords and fergusions.

( we converted the heater to propane, but the engine is still gas, points, etc. In fact.. I've been the one keeping this thing going, as it is so similar in operation / maintenance as my old 8n. Anyway, it had problems this am, mechanic pulled the little tranny off the back, exposed clutch ( 9" clutch.. or at least 8 7/8 .. etc.. and flywheel is missing teeth. None of our local parts houses has ever heard of redseal.. and don't list contenental parts. This machine is old.. somewhere from late 30's to 50's

I grabbed as many numbers as wer vissible, and will relate here:
casted on the block:
F 400A421/S 3

in the bellhousing near the flywheel:

F600B600

On a barely legible tin tag under the oil cannister:

2397 3040

We are in the process of trying to locat a machine to update this one with, but would greatly appreciate any help locating parts for this one as we are in a crunch.

I'm cross-posting this to the fergusion forum too.. as they use continental engines.. etc..

Thanks,

I unhid my email and will be checking it from home too see what i can turn up.

thanks again

Soundguy

Based on some information that I have, which is incomplete, but at least is something.

It is possibly a Continental F124, F140, or C400, based on application, age, and I am guessing on size. I could tell more from specifics on the piston/bore and ring dimension.

You might want to contact the supplier to your local parts house, or implement dealer if youhave one close by. Chances are good that Pioneer or ATP could match something up over their tech hotline.

Continental did use some "off the shelf" items, and they may have the correct part- which may have come off of some other automotive application.

You would likely only get the ring gear rather than the full assembly, but they would need a tooth count, diameter inside and outside of ring gear and possibly thickness across the gear face.

All the local parts houses have never even heard of red seal.. most not even continental.. go figure... That is why i have to go online to get parts for my ford 8n..

As for the ring gear.. the mechanic is going to try to remove it today ( non-destructively.. as we may need it for measurements.. etc.

Thanks

Yeah, a friend of mine was looking for parts to rebuilt the Red Seal flathead gas engine in his old forklift. Called a Caterpillar dealer and wound up buying a factory rebuilt shortblock right from Cat.
