Looks like a lot of questions but not a lot of answers going on here, but I will post my question anyway and see what happens. From reading other posts, it appears that an Allis 5040 is considered to be the same tractor as a Long 445 or 460. That being the case, can anyone tell me what would most likely be wrong to cause the power steering not to work correctly? Somebody suggested a filter, but if that is the case, how do you find the filter to change it?

The Long 360 has the power steering as an entirely separate system. The pump for the steering is belt driven and mounted high on the right side just behind the radiator. The lift system has a pump driven by gears inside the engine- probably the camshaft gears. Not sure the 5040 is the same, but highly likely that it is.

The hydraulic oil filter on most Longs -360, 445, 460, and 610 is on right side of tractor below the starter. It is about 2-3 inches in diameter and 8 inches long. 2 bolts hold cover of filter housing in place. The filter is all metal except for a washer adhered to the end opposite the opening of the housing. I usually clean my filters with gasoline, let dry, and blow with cmopressed air. If hyd. oil is gray or milky, change it. Condensation has caused this. I use 30 wt. oil for hyd. fluid. It will take 5 gallons for a 445 or 460. As far as steering goes, there is a valve at the front end of cylinder. It may need to be adjusted. you also could have a bad ps pump or cylinder. I have been using Longs for almost 30 years. They tend to have similar problems. A weak point is hydraulics but they have done a good job for me. I will try to check by if you need any more help.

Thank you for your help. Are you saying that the power steering runs off of the regular hydraulic system and shares the same fluid reservoir and filter? This is my brother-in-law's tractor so I am trying to help diagnose it by long distance.

On 445s and 460s, the ps system uses the same oil as the hyd. lift and the rear end and transmission. A 360 has a seperate oil supply and is mounted under hood at top, front of engine. It also has a seperate filter in the oil tank. Check oil level on 445s and 460s with dipstick on top, right side of transmission next to hyd. line from pump to lift. By the way, I have never seen a belt driven ps steering pump on a Long. I am not saying it does not exist, however.
