I recently looked at a tractor called a Shop Mule that had something to do with International Harvester. I put this message on the Farmall/ IH board but only got one response which was helpful but I am looking for more info. This tractor looked like it had the sheetmetal from a Farmall A but the engine was centered on the tractor. It set a lot lower to the ground than an A, more like a lawn mower. I think that it has the 113 Continentel four cylinder and I am not sure if it has hydraulics. It is painted yellow. My question is what years did they make this and how many did they make? Any information whatsoever would be appreciated.

Thank you
Keith

About six years ago, I almost bought a "thing" which had a label on the dash identifying it as a shop mule. The seller said it was from WWII. It looked like a small military jeep. Room for two on a bench seat, it had 16 inch tires and a four cylinder engine. The whole thing was only about 44 inches wide and about six foot long. About three feet high. I was told it was for pulling stuff through wharehouse aisles and around shops. Sort of like a donkey engine in a rail yard.

This one actually came from the railroad. The guy that owned it before he passed away used to work there and he bought it from them.

Shop Mules were built from 1918 to 1950 by the W.F.Hebard Co. of Chicago. From the mid/late 1930's they used IH engines and drivelines, some tractor, some truck and some mixed. The A-14 and A-21 models were the only ones that used "tractor sheet metal". They had U-2 (FarmAll A) power plants. There were other models, the "midget series" that looked like runaways from the bumper car ride at the county fair and larger ones, the A-14V that used U-4 (FarmAll H) power, and the J-series that used the 233cid IH truck engine. In 1950 the BUDA co of Harvey, IL bought Hebard out and continued to build them as BUDA-HEBARD Shop Mules until 1953 when Allis-
Chalmers bought BUDA out.
