The tranny in my 1986 K20 finally decided to quit on me. Looking for a newer truck. Anybody know the differences between the 1500HD and the 2500HD trucks of early 2000's. I know they both have 6.0 engines with the 8 lug wheels. The 1500HD's all seem to be crew cabs with short beds.

I Have a 1989 3500 GMC 454 big block 400 turbo trans with electric speedo hook up. Can any one tell me what or if any other trans well work that has overdrive.

If you want a newer computer controlled transmission then a 4l80e will work but will need computer changes to work. It will also need wiring changes. A donor truck at a junk yard could provide everything. You could also swap in a 4l60e but they are not near as heavy duty and have different output shaft. The 4l80e and the turbo 400 both have 32 spline output shafts so if yours is a 4x4 they would interchange. If you wanted you could build up an older 700r4 and change the input gear in your transfercase. You can also change over to a nv4500 manual transmission. I did this on my 93 6.5 diesel 2500. It has the same 32 spline output shaft. You may want to do some figuring to see if overdrive is really right for you. I had a 2500 without overdrive and got 19 mpg. A friends 2500 with overdrive gets 19-20. Axle gears, tire sizes and what you are doing all come into play. Some motor and gear combinations do much better with overdrive and others don't. My 6.5 gets about 5 more miles per gallon in overdrive. Try finding some other trucks equivelant to yours with overdrive doing similar work and see if there is really an advantage to it.

My dad has a 06 1500HD I have an 06 2500HD. One is 8600 GVW other is 9200 GVW. 1500 has standard 3.73 axle ratio and 2500 has 4.10 standard. Same engine trans I do not know. 1500 is closer to the ground same rubber.

The 1500 HD and the 2500 are basically the same truck. 1500 HD was only available in crew cab. 2500 could be built in standard, cab 1/2, or crew cab. If you plan on doing any heavy hauling of any kind... go for the 2500HD. Much heavier frame driveline axles etc. I know ... I watch these being built 5 days a week !!!!!

The 1500HD is very similar to a regular 2500. I have been told the 2500HD is a completely different frame. The 2500's will have the 4L80E tranny (which holds up much better than the regular 1500 4L60E tranny).

The 2500hd has a gm 14 bolt full floater axle. The 1500hd has a smaller semi-floater. The frames are heavier on the 2500. I'm not sure which transmissions the 1500hd have but I would bet they are different, especially the manuals. Brakes are smaller on the 1500hd.
