On the 88 we are looking at purchasing there is no hydraulic unit under the dash. It does however have the mechanical lift unit for a cultivator. Is it possible to remove this and put on the hydraulic control instead? If so how involved of a process is it? Would sorta like to have the hydraulic unit in case I need it. Would sure come in handy from time to time.

Thank you for the other replies fellas. Sounds like the hardest part is finding the hydraulic control. I know some people nearby that may have what I need, but I will have to go and talk to them about it to find out.

Thanks again and Have a Merry Christmas.

#1- you have to find the pump, they are hard to come by.
2- power wash the area around the mechanicl lift, floor boards, pto drive.
3- remove cover on pto, remove 4 bolts holding pto to tractor, and pull it out. *the pto shaft runs the 'lift'/hyd pump.
4- remove the lift unit, install pump housing, reinstall pto, put oil in pump and your ready to go.
*note"
put new seals in the bottom of the pump before installing it.
they tend to leak the oil into the transmisson/differential case.
annnnn d, forget the electric's, they never was very successful.

If I remember correctly you also have to cut the end of the transmission input shaft off. The gear that drives the mechanical lift is on it and is in the way of the hyd. pump.

I believe you are right about the input shaft needing cut off. My dad had an 88 with a mounted corn picker that stripped off the splines on the front of input shaft while picking corn. We got a new input shaft but it was for a tractor with machanical lift and we had to cut it off to make it work in a tractor with hydraulics.
