I am interested in buying a 2255. What should I be careful of and what questions do I need to ask about the tractor? Are there any serial numbers or features I need to steer clear of? Are there any known problems with the rear or the 3208 engine?

Thanks in advance!

Fred

Dont be afraid of the 2255, its a beast and will put any IH or Deere in the grownd! We own 4 of them and two are turbd, The one has 1200 horse, its a deeres night mare. Some people dont like the 3208 or 3150, but its all about taking care of the engine, alittle care goes along way

One area that I would recomend checking are the axle housings. From what I have heard, the axle housings bolts had a tendancy to back out on the 2255, 1355, & 2-150 - expecially when used with duals. I had one that after taking the pressure washer to the area under the remote valves, I noticed the housing was broken. Some other expensive things to look at are leaks coming from under the dash. There is about $600 worth of hydraulic lines behind the dash alone. There is another $600 worth of hoses near hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pumps are easy to change, but are about $900. The radiator will need to be in good shape because they were only good enough to get by with when they were new. Make sure all gears are in good shape, and the over/under shifts good. The Cat engines will start good in cold weather( if you have good batteries), but since they only have one compression ring they will smoke untill they warm up. The Cat also perrs quite loud. If you get a 2255 you will have a heavy load on the way home. Hope this helps, Stu.

Unless you are looking at one for collector reasons, you might want to consider a 2-135. Just an all around better tractor for about the same money. Just my $.02.

As has been stated on this site by Dean Barker, buy the 2255 to collect and look at, the 2-135, 2-155 to do the heavy work with. Much better transmission, brakes and rear ends in the 135s'. And you can pick up them up for not much more than a 2255, sometimes less.

Can help a little. There was a good write-up on the 2255 earlier this year in the Oliver-Hart Parr Collectors magazine by Chris Losey. I would try to get a copy of the magazine/article if possible. >Link
I>Link can tell you the earlier tractors had the model 3150 Cat engine whereas the later units had the updated 3208. Somehow I've got an Operator's Manual for a 2255 around here someplace though I've never owned one. Years ago I was looking into owning one for the farm but times changed. Good luck.
