Hey folks. Merry Christmas! We have TONS of snow up here!

I have smooth, rounded profile 9.5L14 front tires on my 2-44 loader backhoe (Olly 550). They are completely useless for snow removal - I am sliding all over the place!

What do you suggest instead? Don't say move south!

Regular ribbed tires on new rims or will a set of snow chains on these do the job?

Chris, I have the very same tractor, right down to the shuttle shift. It has the same front tires, and rears. It goes nowhere without rear chains, and when pushing snow, the weight removed from the tires when the bucket is on the ground does the same thing. It is frustrating, but when the bucket is full of snow and lifted it steers ok. I also looked around for replacement tires but the cost was prohibitive. I found that the frontend on a 770 when pushing snow does the same thing. I think tires aren't the problem. I believe the loss of weight when using the bucket, even in the float position, causes most of the loss of grip, and the closer the temperature gets to 32 degrees, the worse the front grip becomes. Front chains might help, but I found that frozen fingers have made me more fond of my 1979 junker plow truck, and I will just use the 550 for loading snow when I need more room. If this is your only snow moving machine, then maybe a set of front chains may help, but snow is slippery stuff.

Thanks Marv.
Yes, I agree. I kept the bucket a wee bit higher this morning and got a bit more front wheel control, especially going backwards. So I am tending to scrape backwards into a pile then shovel it up forwards! I may try the chains.
Also, yes, I need chains on the rears. My driveway is quite sloped, so it too easy to spin the wheels.
Got a new pair of rear chains for $199 on eBay - crossing my fingers that I have not been ripped off somehow (like - oh, that price was for just one!). Will pick em up later this week.

I have 3-rib tires on my other 550 and it does steer better in snow, but it doesn't seem to like Winter! I think it's from Florida ;-) Solenoid/starter problem to fix when Christmas it outta the way.

Thanks folks.
I have been looking up some specs. Standard issue for my rig is lightly-ribbed 7.6x15-6ply. These wider ones were optional ($30 extra for 2 x rim and tires in 1969).

If I go to the wider three-ribs, what do I get for my money? A bit more turning-grip? A bit less cut into turf/dirt? All of the above?

What do you mean by offset on the rims? You mean so the tires or inner rims don't brush into the axle or steering arms on sharp turns?

Any recommendations for who to buy these rims/tires from (Watertown, NY 13601)?

Thanks again...

I just checked with my old tire shop. 7.5Lx15 three rib 8 ply tube type are 75.17 each and 9.5Lx15 8 ply three ribs are 87.02 each. This price does not include the tubes. You would have to find some 15" rims, keep in mind the off set of the rim may need to be looked at.

If you like those wider tires on a TLB,you might want to find some wider rims with the right dish and go to a 9.5Lx16 triple rib. I have them on my 1850.

If you put Wider Tires on there it is going to be that mutch harder to steer and harder on the stering gear with that loader on there un less you have power steering I put 650 16 on our 550 Loader tractor and did not have mutch troubel when the front end was on the ground

I use 3-rib fronts on mine with a 3-point blade and it turns fine in the snow.
