My 550 (70"s model) takes spells where it will only run at operating speed with the choke on.
I"ve found that if I take the air intake hose off and choke it with my hand it will clear the carburetor and start running fine for awhile. Otherwise I have to run with the choke on. It will not clear itself by running. I have to choke it down at the air intake.
I seem to have plenty of vacuum at the air intake and have cleaned the carb twice and rebuilt once.

Blocking the air intake with my hand seems to clear it up for quite awhile.
Anybody else ever had this problem?

If your 550 has a Marvel carb on it pay close attention to the area around the high speed adjusting jet. (The slanted one on the bottom) Take it out and make sure there is no crud or scale in that area as it acts as a fuel well to give it more gas when you crack the throttle. After running my 770 for years with having to use the choke most of the time as soon as it got cold and wanting to die when letting the clutch out I got lucky. I broke that high adjusting jet when going through the carb AGAIN, so I went the the parts store and boneyard. He didn't have one but could order one for around $20, but I needed the tractor that day so I went out to the boneyard and couldn't find any valves but found a plug from a John Deere 45 combine that would fit the hole where the valve was. So for $1 I figured I'd give it a try, put that plug in and that tractor has never run that good, just a little rich I should get a little smaller main jet some day. Now it can be -10 and I might have to run the choke a little a couple of minutes. No more killing when letting out the clutch. The reason why this worked is not having that valve in there lets it have more gas in that area for when you crack the throttle or the governor opens up. So make sure that area is clean, any rusty scale will make the amount of gas in the fuel well less. Steve

Thanks for everybody's input.
I do have a new screen in the sediment bowl but I'm sure fine particles are getting through.
I do have a good stream of gas going through the gas lines but it is probably contaminated.

I've tried different inline gas filters from the auto store but found most are made to be used with gas line pressure and not gravity feed. A neighbor farmer uses gas filters for lawn mowers, but they are kind of small and the clear ones look half full of gas usually and he has more problems than I do.

Has anybody found an in-line gas filter that would work??

I have found 5 filters that work the one that was on there when new the setement bulb that works catches water and stuff run that on the 1755 and 550 and 4 othere tractors I run to there is one that has a 1/8 pipe thred in to the carborator and a ruber gas line end on the other side it is about 2 in long and 1in or so around have used that on a CA and the 880 but I had to replace the gas line on the CA every year becous it would rot out and the 880 is going to get the same thing I gave the 2 CAs there is a small Ford filter about 2 in long and 2 in around and it has 1/8 pipe thred in to the carborator and 5/16 fuel line at the othere end it was the only filter that had that set up they make I used a pice of 5/16 brake line close to the right length and had my brother bend it up to fit and the other a 77 with a doubel end ruber line filter about 2 in around and 3 in long there was a metal one on there and I put the clear plastic one on there so I could see if it was cloging up I have not had eny problems that I can blame on the filter except when it pluged up and had to be replaced but I keep the tanks full on these and I have herd that makes a diferance I have had to clean out the tank on 4 of these and the 77 needs it to

Have you concidered a new sediment bowl assembly? The screen in a new one should be fine enough to filter those rust particles out and leave them in the bottom of the bowl I would think. If it continues, take the tank off and coat the inside with Red Kote.

Common problem. What you have is some dirt or rust in the tank/lines and every once in a while that dirt/rust gets into the main jet and causes your problem. By putting your hand over the air intake you force it to suck the dirt/rust threw the main jet and that all is well for a while. You need to make sure you have a screen in the sediment bowl like it should have and maybe even a screen in the elbow where the fuel line goes into the carb.

Take the carb off and get some good cleaner such as Berryman's or Gunk brand.Dissassemble the carb and soak everything overnite in the cleaner.Take it out rinse with clean water, run fine wire through all the passages and then blow everything out with compressed air.Order a comprehensive carb overhaul kit and put everthing in,including the new shaft seals. When you put your hand over the air intake your doing exactly the same thing your choke plate in the carb does.In my experience if you have to use the choke to get the engine to run you fuel supply problems. Most of the time a worn dirty carb is the problem.I know you said you cleaned it twice and rebuilt it once but,it still could have dirt and worn parts.A very common trait of a gasoline engine. One other thing to check is the fuel flow from the tank.Take the supply line loose at the carb and turn the fuel on.It should have a stream as large as the line a constant flow. And if it has a cheap inline filter, trash it,the tractor will never run correctly with it on there.

Yep, same here. Mine is a 1969 2-44 (550). It is like finding a sweet spot - at about half choke it is great - anything else it is horrible!
My Winter project is to start at fuel tank and work down to make sure all is clear, rebuild and then adjust carb/governor, check timing and manifold gaskets...that what they tell me to do, and the manual says much the same. Will check distributor while I am at it, for wear and firing order.
Mine will run ugly and will not take a load without half choke, plus run on and backfire after I set off the ignition. Even some smoke will exit out of the air intake - right back through the oil bath!

Chris, if your tractor "runs on/diesels" after you turn the ignition off, it is idleing too fast or it is carboned up in the cylinders or both. Once you turn the switch off there is no more spark at the plugs so the igntion of the gas in the engine has to come from inside the engine. Higher octane gas, lower idle speed, or clean the combustion chambers are the fix. Have a good new year.
