My Oliver has a red grounding cable. 1) Does this mean it is positive ground?
2) If yes, will it kill the battery to hook it up backwards (It starts and runs, but I have killed two new batteries)?
3) Can I just hook up the positive to the ground?
4) Is there a way to tell if it worked without killing another battery?

RW, heres the deal, if its an alternator like 99% of them are NEGATIVE GROUND unless its one of those special made Pos ground units which I doubt.

Sooooo dont hook up an alternator backwards or you will harm it !!!!! !!!!!

Is there an ammeter that works???

What model tractor is it? is it 6V or 12V? All the 6 volts originally were positive ground, yes. As far as killing the battery, what does your amp guage say, charge or discharge?

Are there any numbers or model numbers on the alternator? I think it would be negative grounded. I think it would blow the diodes if it was connected wrong. Hal

I don't know what to tell you without knowing the model,to know if was originally 6 or 12. I put a 12v generator on my 77 and still run it positive ground. But...if yours was 12 originally,it's most likely supposed to be negative ground. Most of the new battery cables you get at the auto parts store are red anyway,so I wouldn't go by that.

I checked the tractor last night for numbers. -It has an D600A619 on the right side of the engine block under the exhaust man. and intake man. If it helps the firing order is 153624 (from the left side. -The distributor cap has the numbers 1111412 8E1 -the alternator is a motorcraft with the number 14 on it. -It has a front axel that looks like the 88 -I looked on line and all over the tractor for a serial number and couldn't find one. Can anyone help with this as well? Thanks again, robin

You have an Oliver model 70. The last model 70 tractors were made in 1948. Since you have a Motor craft alternator it is NEGAITVE ground and is 12 Volt and was added a long time after the tractor was built.. Serial number should be on the engine block. Now on the battery thing. Does the battery go "dead" when the tractor is just setting? J.

Yes, totally dead and won't take a charge after sitting. I have been connecting the ground to the positive side of the battery and it runs (I have had a fuel leak in the tank and a coolant leak so I haven't run it long). I have a good amount of field that I would really like to mow and I have a 5 foot flail mower I would love to run with the Oliver. I will also need to replace the exhaust manifold. It is going to be restore over a very long time, while in use (hopefully.) Thanks, Robin

If it's a 50 or 51,it would be a 77 not a 70. In that event, the serial tag will either be on the right side of the transmission housing just ahead of the right brake, under the operators platform. Or if it has disc brakes,it will be on the lower part of the dash, just above the hyd pump or cultivator lift, whichever it has.

I don"t think it has a hydrolic pump. There is no 3ph. I will check for the serial numbers again where you have indicated.

I will check the serial number and get the info. I think it a 50 or 51 model 70. It is an inline six cylinder with a wide front, no 3ph and as double H shift pattern. Thanks
