I have a problem with the governor on an Oliver 60, when I start the tractor the engine RPM runs away. The inside of the governor looks OK, bearing is good, bushing in the block looks good etc. But, when the engine is off, and I put the hand throttle and the carb"s throttle lever to the idle position, the rod from the governor lever to the carb is about 3/4" to long. In other words, the governor can"t pull the carb throttle into the idle position. I am thinking the rods may have been changed by someone. Does anyone have a 60 and could measure the length of the rod from the carb to the governor arm?
Thanks
Rich

First of all pull the throttle all the way down with the rod from the carburetor unhooked at the governor, Adjust the rod so it just fits in the hole and then add 1/16 inch for over travel. Make sure the holes in the governor arm are good, most are worn too much. Braze them shut and redrill them if they are. Make sure you have 19 active coils in the governor spring (I guess all the later ones are 19 coils and it is the same spring) Check the amount of wear on the weights in the pivot pin area. If they are worn and lets face it the 60 will be almost 60 years old or better the weight will hang up and give poor governor action. Start there. More questions on the model 60 now than when I started in 1960 and a few were still being used.

Rich:Sorry active coils on a 60 should be 14 not 19. J.

I understand what you have suggested, and I have checked that, but I still can't back the governor arm forward enough to allow the engine to idle. It appears that the rod is too long.

I am stalling a little. The closest 60 for me to look at is 35 miles from me. Now with engine shut off looking at the carburetor is the idle adjusting screw on the throttle shaft hitting the stop?

If I unhook the the throttle rod from the governor the throttle will hit the idle stop, if I leave it connected the throttle is about 1/2 open, with the hand control all the way to the top.
Thanks
Rich

Throttle rod being the rod between the governor and the carburetor? If so did you read in my first post on how to adjust it? Next thing I have seen where the little rod that comes from the bell crank to the governor spring has broken off and people cobbled those up and as a result of that had poor governor action. Next thing if you unhook the rod between the governor and the carburetor, then have some one start the tractor while you regulate the speed with the rod how does the governor arm react? Send me a phone number and we can discuss it. J
