After a little looking and some scraping, I found the tag.

From what I can tell going by the numbers on this sight, it's a 66 model, but looking at it it seems older. Did they ever use an alternator on the 550, or did they keep it as a generator only tractor? This one's got a generator on it.

Here's a picture of the tag.

I also have a link to the rest of the pictures.

Looking at your photo, I see there is a mustard coloured undercoat - is that typical? I see it on my 1958 550 too - at least on the major cast stuff.
As a novice, I once thought that this showed an overpainted industrial part or model. But maybe the novice me was right?

On my 1969 White 2-44 I see red oxide undercoat on the loader and other parts.

I think that's just the color primer they used. Our 1755 had the same color under some of the sheet metal.

Don:

Your tractor was built in 1959 S/N 79 966.  The serial number plate on your tractor is the type used in that period.  If it is a 1966 it would have the Keystone shaped serial number plate.  It is specification number "45".  When the "50" series production started the specification number changed to three digits, thus it was built prior to late 1964.

Tnanks BA Star. I thought it was a 1 infront of the 7 yet but '59 makes more sense. I figured it was easiest to get a shot of the tag and post it- Someone would know better...

I'll pass the info along to my brother.
