I have a Oliver 70 with 4-speed trans. I've been told these tractors came from factory with 6 gears with the fifth and sixth gears locked out, that there is a spacer that can be removed to get the 6 forward gears. Is this true? Has anyone ever done this before? What is involved in taking spacer out?

There is a way to get 5 and 6 gear. I have a book that says you can. I just bought a 4 speed oliver 70. Do you know if this is a rare tractor.

I just got rid of two 1936 Hart Parr 70 Stds. with Serial numbers 300187 and 300524. One had a 6 speed with all 6 gears cast on the cover, and the other tractor was a 4 speed. Just a bit more info that may help.

humm...never heard of this before. I think it may have been jsut the tractors shipped on steel with the 2 gears locked out. have you opened it up and just stared? I bet if ya stare a couple hours the answer will come to you...usually works for me.

From what I understand, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I would like to know for sure, only Oliver 70s model year 1944 and beyond were equipped with 6 speed transmissions because 1944 was the first year for the famous Oliver double-neutral 6 speed. In years prior to 1944 then, fifth and sixth gears wouldn't have existed and so could not be locked out. As I said, this is only what I have read/learned so if anyone else can shed some light on this, it would be appreciated. I've never removed a lock-out collar from any transmission so I can't tell you what's involved, but logically it should be a simple two-piece bolted collar that can be removed without any transmission disassembly. We can hope, can't we. Best of luck.

WFE,the way I read my book the Oliver Hart-Parr 70 had the 4 speed trans.Starting with the "streamed lined" model in '37, the 6 speed was an option and 5th & 6th were locked out if the tractor had steel wheels. In 1944 and after the 6 speed was standard. To answer the original question,if it is a 4 speed without the double neutral it is just a 4 speed,If it has a double neutral and is a 4 speed,5th & 6th gears are locked out.I would guess it would not be too hard to get 5th & 6th unlocked.

Thanks for the clarification; makes sense now that I read it that way.
