I have just purchased a 1969 Gas Oliver-White 2-44 loader backhoe. Before I check a bunch of things and get into some manual reading about adjusting the timing, I thought I would ask you experts for help in case it is something else.
Symptoms: runs on and backfires after switching off ignition. Stutters when trying to up the revs, but gets there eventually when not under load. Stutters like crazy under load. Likes lots of choke to run nicely and get up to higher revs. So long as I use lots of choke, I can get up a fair speed on the flat. Does not like hills - even very small ones! Starts stuttering again. Hard to start without choke, even when warm.

Notes: the distributor cap seems a bit undersized (compared to my other 550) but it clips on OK. Could the firing order be wrong? I am guessing timing is out, but could it be a carb problem?

Many thanks in advance, Chris

I agree with the other posts and would check your fuel flow first. Good Luck and have fun with the new toy!

Clean your gas tank out good. Clean sediment bowl good. Inspect sediment bowl screen and replace if necessary. Blow out gas line. Could be dirt/rust/water in your tank/line causing this problem. Some even install a inline metal filter if you can't get system clean. Don't use a tiny cheapee inline filter or that will cause you problems also. Once you do all this clean carb again. Carb may need to be rebuilt. Also inspect intake manifold for leaks - it may be sucking air in there.
If it comes down to ignition problem - check out the electronic ignition. We added that to a one of our 550's and were very pleased.

I think you have a fuel problem with engine running lean. If there's a main jet adjusting screw on the carburetor you need to open that and this will enrich the fuel mixture. If there's a fuel filter I would change it and check for a good flow of gas at the carburetor inlet. Hold a clean container to catch the gas and you should get a good stream like a cow peeing on a flat rock. If there's just a trickle of gas you have dirt or rust over the drain hole in the fuel tank.
