Working on a 550 that was in a fire. This has been one of those looong projects. The new cluster gauge Dad bought way back when is - negative ground. Not even sure where he bought it or I"d try to return it for a + positive ground cluster gauge. The schematics I have are for a + positive ground system. What changes do I need to make to - negative ground system so I can utilize the - negative ground cluster gauge? Thanks!

I put in a new Neg ground cluster gauge about 4 years ago and as I recall there were only a few steps:
1. Disconnect the battery
2. Turn the coil around so the the Neg terminal is wired to the distributor
3. The Amp meter is already correctly wired in your new cluster gauge, so no rewiring needed here
4. Connect the battery with Neg ground
5. Polarize the generator by only MOMENTARILY touching a wire in the BAT terminal of the voltage regulator and the A (armature) terminal of the generator. This should give a small spark

About a year after I did mine, I bought a Pertronix kit with a new high-output coil and now I have electronic ignition and it runs like a charm and idles much nicer than before.
Good luck

Thanks Doug, that's what I've done.
