I have a 1966 1850 MFWD with a Hydra-Shift. The problem is when I pull the lever to down shift the unit goes into free wheel and the tractor will stop. I have to put the clutch in because it will then shift. New filter and fluid. Any ideas? PK

Probably the drag strips are worn off not allowing the sprag to turn and lock up the shaft. That is generally what happen with an intermittent operating sprag.

When you shift it into underdrive, the direct drive clutch disengages and the one-way (sprag) clutch takes over. When the sprags get worn, it will not 'grab' and you will get the symptoms you describe.
Another possibility is that you are using oil that is too 'slippery' and will not allow the sprags to bite properly.

We've five 1850 Ollies around here. One of them an earlier model behaves the same way as you describe. I too am interested in a better answer. Meanwhile this tractor we clutch whenever shifting the hydra-drive. Works fine. I suspect the oil cooler is inadequate as compared to the other four tractors.
