Hey guys, I was wondering what type of carb is on my 1959 Cockshutt 540 and where I can get a rebuild kit. Does the TSC sell these? I also need a set of points and maybe a condenser. I was also wondering if you can get a 12 volt generator or alternator with a cable drive for the tach. Mine has an aternator on it and the tach cable is disconnected. Thanks to all in advance.

Allen, if Carb is original it will be a Zenith 68j8-12262 repair kit # k12262 and gasket set c181-329. If not then take inner # from brass tag to NAPA or cab shop and they can order it. As for distributor if original it will be a Delco 1111717, I don't have the tune up part#s handy but NAPA will have then listed under Continental 162 motor. If your generator is complete and has a tach drive then why not just get it rebuilt as a 12 volt. this is assuming your 540 is a 58 or 59 as the 61's were 12 volt. need more email me. Irv

I beleive your carb is a Zenith Bendix, but it is possible that you may be a victim of a "carb swap". If you look at your carb there should be a brass tag, or round brass button with the model # that you will need to get a kit. I don"t have a TSC in my area but I did purchase a kit at NAPA just recently and it was a very high quality kit very reasonably priced.

You should have an "auto-lite" distributor, and again, I recently purchased a points set and condensor at NAPA. There will also be a model # on the distributor itself if they have trouble finding them in the "old book" but I have good parts men that don"t have piercings in their orrifices and need a computer screen and "make year model".

There is an outfit on ebay that has had a 12 volt generator with tach drive for awhile, have not checked lately, the price was high. IMHO you would be money ahead to find a local gen/electric motor repair shop that has an older gentleman in the back. He might just have what you need or tell you where you can find a nice used inexpensive unit. But the short answer is yes, you can buy a 12 volt generator with cable drive new or used with a little search.

I would have guessed Auto-Lite as well. Then I look in the official Cockshutt shop manual and it shows a Delco, no listing for the Auto-Lite. Then I look in the 540 parts book. and it shows only 1 part number for a distributor and those numbers are for an Auto-Lite, So between the 2 of you, I like to know the make and model of the distribuot on your tractors and maybe serial numbers as well so I can make a notation in my records.

Allan: It is a Zenith. I do have the numbers for various repair kits, if you have a problem the largest Zenith carb parts distributor in the Eastern USA is in Western Ohio. Let me know. Distributor is a Delco and tune up kits for it weill also fit other tractors.
