Warning to everyone. I supposedly bought an Oliver tractor from Vern Otto from Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada. It was posted in the Photo Ads. I wired him money as requested and was told the tractor would be shipped within a couple weeks. I hadnt heard anything and dropped him an email to see where things were.

I got a story back about the fact that the tractor I had bought had been sold by the actual owner and Vern hadnt paid for it. In the meantime he says he used my money to buy another tractor and will send my money back in time. At this point Im out a little over $3,500 and am evidently acting as Verns banker.

I called him twice and he hung up on me both times. When I told him I would post it on ytmag.com to warn everyone he told me hed take a long time to get my money back to me. A warning to anyone who is buying a tractor from him DONT!!! Drop me an email or give me a call if you like and I can give you more details.

I bought a Cockshutt 560 from him about 7 or 8 years ago off this site. He was also insistent that I wire the funds, but I had a hauler pick it up along with three others in North Dakota.

If in fact he has taken your money, you need to file a police report. Priro to doing so make an outline of the events and gather all your documentation. You might also report his actions to the moderator to see if they will revoke his ability to advertise here until the matter is resolved.

that sure would stink, however, I would never send that kind of money without seeing the merchandise in person, I would have to say the guy had to have some reservations about the whole deal, and must have some extra $$ to burn to take a chance like that, My 2 cents

First off, I'm so sorry that a Canadian did this to you. This is not the first time I've heard of someone north of the border pulling a dirty tractor deal, and it sure pee's me off. Like has been said further down this thread, the vast majority of tractor guys are good, honest fellas that you can trust in complete confidence. THOUSANDS of deals are done that nobody ever hears about because nothing untoward ever happened, but the occasional bad apple is in the basket, and this sounds like one of them.

Call the authorities in Manitoba. This is a pure case of international, internet fraud, and really not much different than those scumbag Nigerian scammers. He sold you something he didn't own (which is not illegal if he had a binding option on it, but he obviously didn't), and hasn't returned your money. You're not his friggin' bank! At the very least, you should charge him a HEFTY interest rate on your money, because he 'borrowed' it without discussing it with you, so you can set the interest rate without discussing it with him. And warn him you'll reveal his name on this site and others if he doesn't come clean, and good and clean, and pretty doggone quick, too.

One friggin pee'd off

Dsl

Hello,
From what I can tell from your story he never owned the tractor in the first place and I would think that would be fraud, plus the fact that it happened over international borders, this could be more serious than just a neighbor to neighbor disbute. I have included a link to the consumer affairs department in the Manitoba government. Did you correspond with him through the mail, if so, doesn't that constitute mail fraud? Also, you may want to contact a local TV station (Winnipeg, Global TV or CTV )and see if they have a consumer watch dog. Nothing like getting one's face on TV to motiviate someone to go the right thing. By the way, does he post on this page? Haven't seen any posting for him.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of your comments. I am trusting and haven't found hardly anyone in the tractor hobby who I wouldn't trust. I'm hoping it works out and I appreciate all of you helping "police" our great little hobby. I sure don't want to lose my money and will pursue it but I sure felt it necessary to warn everyone else, even it I never see it again. I wouldn't feel right not keeping someone else from losing the same way! Thanks again - I'll keep you informed.

I'd go with Chris's leads to track his a!! down through the local authorities, hopefully they can help your situation. That's a tough call sending a check of that amount to someone you don't know. I know his selling days on here are over and probably where he's at also, the locals probably already know him. What an a!!h!!!. I'm not against the rope, either. Good luck, let us know the outcome.

This guy needs a "Friendly visit" from someone. Surely someone here on this site is in this guys area. Just my feeling in the matter. I'd pay him a visit if this had happened to me. Chris

Yeah, I have not heard good things about Vern and he always has Olivers and Molines for sale on this site, some that I have asked him about.

This seems a little extreme though, I would probably involve the police in this, to me he has made a breach of contract and is actually stealing your money. I dont know how that works being he is in Canada.

Let us know what you work out with him. Good luck.

The police generally won't get involved (the first thing taught at the police academy is (repeat until memorized)"Its a civil matter." But you certainly have a civil case. Would probably be worth it to contact an attorney in that area, and see what your options are (maybe small claims court, do initial pleadings and arrangements by mail, necessitating only one trip to Manitoba, for the actual trial- and that probably wouldn't even be necessary, because I have a feeling he'll magically come up with your money if you press it in court).

I agree with Shep, you need to get the police and/or legal action started. No one should be allowed to do this!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !

I feel digusted that a fellow Canadian has done this to you.
Maybe you could try calling the local police authority for advice....? Here's the number...
Beausejour RCMP (=Royal Canadian Mounted Police)
652 Gertrude Ave. E
Beausejour,
MB, R0E 0C0
(204)-268-1234

You could also tell us his email address and we could all express our displeasure?
Good luck.
