This weekend ran my 77 Standard for a little while and for the first time heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the engine at ful RPMs. My hearing is not so good so I could not tell exactly where it was coming from. Maybe the water pump. If is were a rod or something it would not last long before the engine let go would it? Could a water pump make a knocking noise?

First off you should let a good mechanic listen to the noise to determine what it could be. Most mechanics won't charge for just an opinion. Also yes it could be a rod bearing or wrist pin bushing causing the knock, so take care not to run it until somebody with a trained ear can listen to it. Good Luck
