Worked on the engine a while today. I put the Pistons in with the cyl. number away from the cam
like th IT manual says. That put all the recesses in
the tops of the pistons to the rear of the cylinder.
The guy at the machine shop assembled the pistons,
not my fault. The exhaust valves in the head are recessed in a pre combustion chamber? and only half
of them line up with the recess in the piston. Should they line up or should they not line up? I also lined up the single punch marks on the cam gear and the crankshaft gear, and I wonder what the other marks on the gears are for? I
haven't got to installing the injector pump, so
I'll save those questions for another day.

Dave: I forgot a couple of items. If I am to help you I need the head casting number as well as the forging number for the connecting rod. Also what kind of precision measuring tools do you all have acess to? J.

The casting number on the head is 9606L 35
The tractor serial number makes it a 1955, and there
is a 1955 stamped on the head. I haven't taken a rod out of the engine yet to get a number. The head was redone completely and it appears to have all new valves. I read your article in the M/A 95 issue of antique Power, and all the valves
have the correct margin.

Dave I have not worked on a Buda in a Cockshutt in 35 years, No, the recess is to clear the intake valve. The exhaust valve is not even close. Now did the guy bore the rods to length or just hone them? What recession do you have on the intake valves? Those are 2 dimensions critical to a good starting and a good running engine. Timing th pump is easy, but unless you have the inline pump your PSB runs crankshaft speed so you need to keep three marks in line so to speak. I am awaiting your answers. J.

The connecting rod bushings were honed to accept
a slightly larger wrist pin. Whats a recession??
I don't have an inline pump, the top of the pump
looks like a distributor with tubes instead of
wires. I don't have any precision measuring tools.
As for the numbers, pistons are in the engine can't see the numbers which three should I take out to look for a number? As for the head number, its in the garage, I'll look tomorrow.

I am a little more awake(?) this morning. I looked the book I used to use is I & T CS-2. Some of this you are telling me is not in my book, but anyhow I did some checking. Tollerance on your rods is same as an oliver - or - .002 from the specified center to center distance. Since you have the pocket in the piston, your intake valves should set below the deck of the head. You will need to take out 3 rods and pistons and the way you described it it will be the even numbered ones. I will send you an-e-mail. J.
