Jerry,

Just out of curiosity, is your 1855 a gas or diesel version? If diesel, then see Wrenchbender's post below. If gas, then follow basically same procedure with exception of injector lines, etc. Wondering because 1855 gas engines were noted for blowing head gaskets more frequently than normal. May also want to check if head is true by using a straightedge and feeler gauges--consult manual for allowable untrueness. You will also need to readjust your valve clearances with a warm engine--again consult manual for spec. When retightening head, follow recommended sequence or, if unavailable, begin in center of head and tighten in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation in 1/3 factors of the specified tightening torque. In other words, each bolt will be tightened 3 times, 1/3 of the specified torque each sequence you perform. Have fun!

Not too bad of a job, pull side panels, hood and air cleaner, take off valve cover and rocker arms, take off inj. lines from pump and injectors, pull injectors (if possible), drain coolant, and take off top rad. hose, loosen hose from pump to thermostat housing, remove oil lines to and from turbo, remove head bolts and note location of two threaded bolts used for lifting engine from frame and bolt that supplies oil to rocker arms, leave the exhaust and intake manifolds on,put small chain around exhaust man. at front and intake at rear, opposite corners from each other, pull head. Good Luck!
