I would like to improve starting, maintanance, and running of my Oliver 550. I've read about an electronic ignition device that replaces the distributer. One product I read about was offered by Genesse. I don't know cost or other details yet.

Does anyone have experience doing this?
Is it a good idea?
Is there a donw side?

Thanks.

I bought the kit from Genesee for my Super 55 and it worked out great. Plus they are there to answer any questions during installation. I put it in about 4 years ago now.

i have one on my 8n and it works great only problem i have had with it was the key got left on (not by me) and shorted the coil wich in turn fried the pertronix ignitor. just make sure the key isnt left on overnight im going to put a light in the dash that comes on when the key is on so that doesnt happen again.

I switched my 550 over in Dec 2005 and I love how well it starts and idles at low rpm. I used the Pertronix #1142 with Neg ground and I also got the Flame Thrower hi voltage coil (Low vibration) to go with it. After I hooked it up I changed the spark plugs gap to .035 as recommended. If your 550 still has the positive ground hookup you can get the #1142 as Pos grnd.
I understand that in a very small number of cases that a defective unit can be shipped, so be careful to follow instructions correctly and keep your receipts.
Good luck

I switched one of our 550's over to Pertronix also. Very satisfied with results.

Put in a premium set of points and a "hot" coil and premium plugs and save your money on the Pertronics unit. It is the hot coil that gives the improvement. The pertronics unit just switches on and off juice to the coil the same as the points do. On a tractor with their relatively low rpm levels the coil has plenty of saturation time with points so that old arguement don't wash. Set the points with a dwell meter and as long as this isn't a everyday/all day farm tractor they will last a long time. The fire isn't produced by by the module! It's produced and transmitted by the coil , coil wire , distributer cap , spark plug wire and finally the plug itself. If all of these are "top of the line" which is what the advertisers of the electronic units RECOMMEND , then you will get the same gains with points. Put in JUST the module and nothing else and there will be no gain over a properly set points system. They were not made for low compression , low rpm , emission standards exempt engines because they are of no bennifit. It won't hurt but it would be wiser to buy all the other updates first. I believe you will see the same results everyone is bragging about and save that last $100 or so.
