I have the old broken PTO shaft on my work bench. I want to remove the complete PTO clutch assembly. I have removed the outer parts and am at the snapring that fits in a groove in the splines. I have the snap ring off. How do I get the remaining parts off of the shaft? More info is at http://www.jlynch.org thanks Nelson (Eastern Shore of Maryland)

Hi, Nelson:

I'm also on the Eastern Shore, down in Somerset County, and I fool with old Olivers (grew up on them). If I can be of assistance, feel free to E-mail me w/ a phone number and I'll get up with you.I visited your website and I'm guessing you are in Talbot or Dorchester Co. Seeya, Karl

Nelson the way that I used to take them apart was to remove the four bolts that hold the outer cast housing with the lever assembley, which you have already done. Next you will see 6, 5\16 bolts holding the outer and inner shell together. Notice that these bolts are on 3 locations around the shell about 2 inchs apart on each leg. Between the inner and outer shell on each of these 3 legs are shim packs, each one looks like a small block but when removed you will find out that they are each packs with individual shims only about .010 thick. Do not mix these shim packs up, they should each be equally thick with one another to hold the outter and inner shell evenly apart. After removing the 3 shim packs and the outer shell, now you can remove the clutchs and replace them. Just put it back together in reverse order and check the tension on your pto lever it should have a little snap when it engages. If it does not engage because it is too tight you will have to go back to the shims between the inner and outer shells and add shims equally to each pack, about .010 or .020 at a time. If the lever is too loose and snaps over too easily just remove 1 or 2 shims from all 3 shim pack each time until the lever snaps over firmly. I hope this helps, Good Luck. Shadetree.

Thanks Shadetree:
But I want to take the whole PTO clutch assembly off of the old broken shaft. Not replace anything. I have put a new (used) PTO shaft and clutch back into the Oliver 66. I want the PTO clutch assembly for possible future use.
Thanks again.
