We have a 1600 wide front. We recently repaired the steering shaft as it was just spinning with no steering. After fixing that, the front end steering shaft bolt sheared and it was replaced. Now we have to turn the steering wheel a lot each way to make the front actually turn. Making a right turn quickly when the wheel is turned to the left (and visa versa) is downright dangerous. Hydraulic level is good. No problems with the add-on loader (ok we have a small leak in one of the hoses) and no problem with the 3 pt hitch. Re removed the steering box under the dash and replaced the O rings with no change in performance. I have read posts on the flow controller and a screen or filter. I need to get some idea where to start. Help please.

When the engine is off and you turn the steering wheel how hard does it turn. If you jack the front end up and stick a 8 foot bar between the one front wheel and the spindle are the front wheels locked in place of can they move>

I will check about the steering when the engine is off and let you know. I don't understand what you want me to do with the jack up and bar, please elaborate. thanks dan.

Jack up the front axle (use the loader if double acting cylinders) so the front wheels are off the ground. Stick a good solid long pry bar between the rim and the spindle. Try to turn the wheel(s). Let me know what happens. J.

Boy,that just sounds like a classic case of air in the system. Let me ponder on this for a while. The shaft you replaced, was it in the unit under the dash or the one down under the radiator? The one down there shouldn't have let air in to the system. ???

The shaft we repaired was the one attached to the steering wheel. Air in the system? How do you purge air from the system?

thanks dan

I don't think you do on those. There is a bleeder on the 770-880s,but I've had more of those 4 digit units apart than I care to remember. Just turning the wheels all the way from one way to the other does it. Self purging since it runs off the tractor hydraulics not a self contained unit. John's gonna have to help you with this one. You've never had the slave unit under the radiator apart? The shaft that the steering gear is splined to is tapered. If that was loose I suppose it could act like that.

5 or so years ago we had a similar issue and had to replace the hydraulic unit attached to the steering wheel just behind the dash. It was not cheap, $500 or more rings a bell. The repair shop (independent who was once an Oliver/White dealer) told us that same hyraulic unit was used in semi-trucks back when it was new and they got recalled because of failures that caused accidents on the highway. I am not sure if that is true or not but made me glad we maxed out at 20 mph on old Ollie.

Do you mean the shaft broke in the steering gear.? It's posible the seals in the gear itself are bad. It is a worm gear set up. the piston that turns the fork could just let most of the oil go by? Just a guess.

No no broken gear. Just lots of turns to make the steering work.
