Looking at a 5555 combine this week. Have some questions. Is the 318 crysler good? How much fuel an acre would this burn? Is the 318 replacible by a diesel? Are there white combines out there that have the same parts? Other things to look for? Thanks.

Let me make this disclaimer upfront,I love Oliver and White tractors, but their combines, thats another story. If your dead set on buying an Oliver or White, get a 535,545,or 7300,lots easier to work on! A fellow near here had a 7300 with a perkins and that was a decent machine. I'd rather harvest by hand as to work on a 5555,7600,7800,8600,8800,8700,or8900. JMHO.

Dont know I have only worked on the mm4296(545)or a 8600 didnt think it was too bad nothing like a massey.Doing alot of learnig on the 4296(reason I bought a combine)we all know it is cheaper to have someone combine the small lots than to own a combine but then we wouldnt have our fun.Course I also own a model 18 which I bought for $75.00 and have about $250.00 in new belts on it.Also built new bats for the reel put new chain in the back rebuilt the grain hopper and still not done with it but at least she is lose now and i can run it by hand.

The 5555 is a good combine that was very large for its day,you would never plug up the back of her.Are you sure it is a 318 and not a 413?As far as fuel it does have dual 38 gallon tanks and I dont think they are for ballast.I have a 4296MM (same as oliver 545)that has the 318 industrial and all I can say is it takes less fuel than my JD 105 gas and the 105 takes 10 gallon a hour.If your handy and bored you could drop a 354 perk in her.As far as burning up if you do beans a diesel will burn just as fast as a gas if you do not believe me go to a few tractor junk yards and look at the burned machines.I keep a very large fire ext on the plateform just in case and another in the truck. The dealer still has parts for my older machine so Im guesssing your parts should be available just add a (w)to the front of the oliver part number.Im still mad that i didnt buy one on a sale 8 years ago it went for $300 oh well.I spent $600 on my M.M was wondering how much do they want for the 5555?does it come with both heads and did it do alot of corn or beans?Corn beats the machines to death and bean dust eats em out.

Is it real clean? seems kinda high.Your in Iowa right?anyway with all the JD comming off lease it should drive the price down on the older machines.

I don't know what it looks like yet. Going to look at it on thursday. The cheapest combine with 6 row head I've come across but that don't mean much, I haven't paid much attn to combines. You think it's too high? The other combines that you mention have heads? Woulden't mind a pull type pto unit but one with a corn head would be a tuff find. I'm in southern, MN. Thanks for your replys.

Well the 5555 is about 30 years old now.And a gas, Im in Wi and IL not too far from you and gas combines do not normally bring that type of money here anymore. The MM I bought came with a four row and a grain platform and was shedded most of its life and really clean. The 105JD was bought 8 years ago and came with 6 and 4 row and a quicktach grain head(but no throat)was not a clean machine and was bought for $1000.The one 5555 I said was sold for $300 was also about 8 years ago and the sale ran late(alot of hayrack junk)and the combine was plugged up didnt look good.I would keep a eye out on the farm auctions you should be able to pick up one cheaper unless you are really set on a oliver or a 5555.The problem I have is I normal plant with a 6row I.H 400 planter but my MM 4296 is only 4(never seen a six row for one)So I am trying to find a good oliver 540(worth about $60.00)planter or I have too buy another planter because the 105JD needs a mint in belts.(cheaper to buy a 4-row planter)although I already own a 1240 jd 4-row but that is another story.

Well I'll have to look and see with this combine. I'm also kinda looking for a planter, An Oliver 340 would be nice, a Deere 7000 would be ideal but too pricy. Never seen a Oliver planter in action, not many around here. Oliver was noted for some inovation with their planters. I can't remember what maybe you or some one else knows? Been usin a 58 international, does ok but it's my grandpa's and I should probably get my own.

If you check back in the older post I posted everything I know about oliver planters. But olivers biggest problem was they never made a plateless planter. You could get a 1240 Jd plate or plateless style but only a fool or hard headed farmer would want a plate style planter,or a bunch of crazy oliver collectors.Biggest problem with the 1240 and 7000 are weak main frames and the darn fingers like to collect water and rust.7000 like to have the marker arms fall off.The I.h air planters are ok but the population is not right on like John deeres,it may be the same count but the i.h will plant in bunches where the deere is evenly spaced.I know where a 540 sits at doesnt look to bad.Gonna find out who owns it this spring.

My 4296 is yellow new in 1969.Has the top of the grain bin in brown along with radiator screen.Always wondered if they built a 6-row because the machine is big enough to handel it but i have never seen one.Notice that the neighbors 4296 has a white grain extension but machine is still yellow.

in my research.... it is my understanding that the early MM's (cockshutt) combines were yellow & brown, then yellow & white with th elast being Sumac Red. then the White name appeared. I just got a brochure from a friend in Canada showing the 4296 in Yellow & white. I have another showing the Red vesion. I have seen several yellow & white ones over the years. --- MAJ

Well Im glad someone is doing some leg work.Any idea on the years as to paint colors, also when were the last ones built? The 5555 came out in 1969 which was the largest in the industry. But I dont know when the 7300 and 7600 and 7800 came out.Like I said before my MM is brown and yellow and is a 1969 so I was wondering how much time does it leave before they were replaced.I also think the little 7300 had the longest production run but not sure on it just seems it was around forever.

I'm looking for a 5555 or 7600, preferably red w/MM on the nametag. 5555 = 5297 in MM.

the 354 Perkins was the superior engine in these. also look for the hydro.

fire danger is greater on a gasoline engine than the diesel, I'm told many of the chrysler v-8's burned up.

I think the 7800 replaced the 5555. after that they were all White's.
