What would it take to swap out a blown up 310 with a Detroit power unit? Would a 1900 or 1950 'tub' be needed & would it fit up? Do all 4-53s have the same mountings & bellhousings? Could the mounts of a 1900 or 1950 be used? Would the 1900 or 1950 under/over adaptor be needed? How much 1900 or 1950 sheet metal would it take? Any other problems?
I know about the noise of Detroits I have a 2/53 in a crawler loader.
If possible it should be a pullin bull with the nice hydraulics of the 1x55s.
An unrelated question is why are the 540 ptos limited (according to the IT book) to 60 HP?

Highboyford is correct in that the best solution would be to install the 5.9 L Cummins. You can find one from a wrecked dodge truck. Contact Oseola Implement and Supply Osceola, Nebraska. They have a 402 area code. Ask for Leonard Davidson, owner. They have swaped at least 25 of these and have a kit of parts to do it.

Swapper is right the frames are different and you would need a donor. All 4-53 are not the same some are right hand some left hand mounting pads also can be different also the blowers can be swapped around.Im guessing you have a 4-53 lying around but if you dont and you have a few dollars I would buy a bellhousing for a 2-140 white and put a nice 5.9l cummins in her alot less headache and 140hp to boot and if the tractor has a good rearend now and has never been ran low on oil dont worry about the hp incress it wont hurt it.

I start in on this. If somebody that has actaully done the swap could help I'm sure Jerry would appreciate more help. The 4-53, 3-71 and cat 3208 are very wide engines. Olivers uses a wide flange frame for all these engines. If the 1900 4-53 frame will fit the 1755 transaxle you could pull it off. I would continue to use the Over-Under box. The 1900 series is much more beefier tractor. I would question if the transaxle would absorb the torque of the bigger engine. Tractors with greater than 60 HP used 540 rpm pto's. The trend to 1000 shafts was brought on by torque. By doubling the speed the shaft was made twice as strong. Or by doubling the speed the torque the shaft is exposed to is cut in half, hence not twisting the shaft in half.
