I have an Oliver Backhoe But I can't
figure out which Oliver tractor it is.
I think it is a model 1600. It has a 6 cyl
diesel. Can someone offer some suggestions?
Thanks Al

: It looks like a quick way to narrow this down is look at the tractor lube oil filter. 1600 uses a spin on with 3/4" threads( same thread as most gas power
Ford pickups). 1650 diesel has a cartridge type filter.

:I have a 1967 1650 4x4 loader bachoe. It apparently was sold as a White 4-78 but has an ugly repaint job. Tractor sounds similar to Bob's except for tire sizes. What model is your loader? That may help with age. Also I beleive their were 1550 industrial models that are much like the 1600-1650.

Al, sounds to me like you can feel confident it's a 1600. Len

Al -

What is the serial number (on plate attached at the bottom of the instrument panel support casting)?

I have a similar 1600 Industrial with a bucket loader and a gas engine. It apparently had a backhoe at one time, but the hoe had been removed before I aquired it. It's a solid tractor, but the transmission reverser (called "Reverse-o-torque" or something) has given me fits for years.

Check and see if the engine is an indirect injection or a direct injection diesel. The direct injection engine would place the tractor as a late model 1650. the indirect injection would mean it could be a 1600 or early 1650. Note that the industrial models had different model numbers, i.e. 2-78 and 4-78 for example. The 4-78 had front wheel assist. If you get a casting number off of the block we should be able to come up with a year that the engine was built. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure whether the injectors are direct or indirect injection. The injector pump is a Roosa Master. The casting numbers on the left side of the engine are 185220-F and 104306A. I believe that the power steering uint is a Gemmer type.

Not sure how to ID positively without the tag.
Below is a brief description of my '63 model 1600):
- 6 cyl engine - same as in the 1650 ag tractor
- 6 speed main trans - double "H" pattern without reverse gears
- "Reverse-o-torque" shuttle reverser (no clutch - 2 pedals on right side select fwd and reverse AND control the throttle)
- 2 brake pedals on LEFT side of operator
- Cessna power steering pump - belt driven from front of engine
- Main hydraulic pump driven off front end of crankshaft
- No factory drawbar or rear PTO
- 900x20 front tires - 18.4(?)x30 rears
- One-piece radiator grille insert made of heavy perforated steel plate

My tractor is similiar to your description.
I have been looking for serial numbers on the
engine. I steamed cleaned the entire tractor,
removed the hoe and loader. I am going to strip
it down and repaint it and fix some of the broken
welds on the hoe etc. I ordered a book on Oliver
tractors. Perhaps it will shed some light on
the mystery.

I'll take a closer look at mine for other ID tags, ect. this weekend. I know there's one on the shuttle transmission, but am uncertain about the main tranny, motor, etc. If I find anything that looks helpful I'll let you know.
