Due to miscommunication with fellow workers we in error filled the crankcase twice with the called for 6 quarts of oil or a total of 12 quarts. After a short time the tractor started to miss and stop but would restart. We stopped and then noticed diesel fuel leaking from the underside of tractor. We could stop the leak with shutting off the valve under the fuel tank. Finally we discovered our error and drained the oil and refilled with the 6 quarts desired. We started the tractor and it seems fine and the fuel leak appears to have quit. Can you explain how the fuel leak might have been caused by overfilling oil to the crankcase. Also do you think we did any damage to anything.

when we noticed the diesel fuel leak under the tractor we were unable to find any fuel line leaking anywhere and were dumbfounded as to where the leak was.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your comments---however I don't think diesel was getting into the oil but there was too much oil because my buddy filled the crankcase without realizing I had already filled it--Don't ask how stupid we were.We Discovered our mistake after only maybe 20 minutes when the motor seemed to caugh and slow down and quit running.the tractor would restart and about the same time this happened diesel fuel started leaking from under the tractor motor about where the drain plug is located. We looked up from under the tractor but couldn't find where the leak was coming from. When we drained the oil from the crankcase the oil did not appear to be diluted by diesel fluid.

when we stopped the motor the diesel leak continued until we shut off the valve under the fuel tank. after we opened the flow valve under the tank and restarted the tractor with the correct six quarts of crankcase oil the leak of diesel from under the tractor stopped. my question--how the heck can the too much oil problem cause a diesel fuel leak Do you think I have two unrelated problems that just occured at the same time

thanks for your reply--small time farmer--can't you tell!!!

I am going to have to disagree with Jeff on one thing. DO NOT RUN the tractor if it is making oil. This can lead to catastrophic engine failure. I have seen this first hand on my 77D. Check the manual fuel pump on the right side. The diaphragm starts to get old and will crack or get small pin holes in it. Or in your case the extra oil may have caused the pump to fail prematurely. An easy check is to remove the fuel pump from the block (leave the fuel lines attached) and turn on the fuel supply. There should be fuel leaking out the arm opening of the pump. This may take awhile to see results.

Hi I think you were lucky. My experience with a overfull crankcase on a diesel engine is it will take off in high rpms and the only way you can shut them off is to close off the intake air source. Probably the worst thing you did was with too much oil in it was the lower oil rings on the pistons could not keep the oil off the cylinder walls. Which maybe some oil did get by causing a miss. I don"t about your fuel leak, it may leak some more later. Just work the tractor hard to break the engine in and seal the rings. Good luck.
