On my newly acquired 1550, what grade of gas should I use? Here in Canada we can purchase 87 to 91 octane. Tractor may see some full power work this winter on a snowblower. I know that the IHs need 91, but what about the 1550? Also, are there any special needs that should be filled re tune up
details? So far this tractor has proven to be a good unit. And no, there have been no fights in the shed with it's red shedmates!!....QR

QR - 87 octane will be fine for your 1550!

Only if you hear continuous pinging/knocking (ala a diesel engine...) when RPM's are pulled down below 1,800 or so and with the throttle wide open should you consider going to a higher octane.

And I want to tell you that the Oliver green seems to blend in with 2150 on my SW-6TA. Really apreciate your contribution to YT....QR

I'm pretty sure the gas we run is just 87 oct.- the lowest we can buy around here. It's just whatever the gas man brings us. Unless the engine has had some high performance things done to it, don't worry about it and run the cheap stuff.

All of our gas here has some ethanol in it (some gas staions still claim to run 100% gasoline but it's gotta be harder to come by around here)and we haven't had any problems with it. Don't even bother using gas driers like HEET in the winter anymore. The ethanol takes care of it.

Dont count on that ethanol to take care of all the moistur in gas becous it will evaporate after a while and then you are left with just gas

If we notice any water building up in the sediment bowl we'll add a bottle of de-icer, but we haven't had to use any for several years now.

Thats what I was told by a guy that is fermilyer with runnung Alcohol in race cars and ethenal is the same thing you are probly also using less gas now than you did in the past I only have water problems when I try to hard to get something clean with the power washer but we get all our gas from the shell gas station that goes threw 2 or 3 tankers a day and take it out in 5gal plastic cans to the farm and until last year when the state mandated the use off ethenal if it was cheeper we have had no problems with 10 tractors preformance wise but now have 2 more that over flow and have to have the gas shut off but cant prove it is the gas
