When my great grandmother died in the 90's the family quit farming our farm and sold some of the equipment and stored the rest in the barn. We have 2 Oliver 77's in there that I would like to get started and running so they don't sit and rot away.

I'm very familiar with automotive mechanics. Before I touch this thing I thought I'd ask what things I should look for.

I plan on:
-charging/replacing the battery (converted to 12v)
-check fuel system and cleanout as needed (guessing carb bowel and possible whole carb need to be cleaned out)
-change fluids. besides coolant and oil what do I need to do on a tractor?
-check electrical. ignition wiring, plug wires, plugs, etc.
-check air filter

Also one last question. I only drove on these tractors back when I was around 10 years old and I don't recall the operation of all the pedals. Any insight on this?

Thanks!

Well I"ve got the engine turning well and ignition working. Wow the fuel system is really really bad. I"ve got the carb off to rebuild. it looks simple enough but the fuel tank has bad rust and the bowl/valve below the fuel tank is totally rotted and clogged.

Thanks for the tips so far.

I'm going to focus on the tractor that is clearly in better shape than the other and it may not be a super 77 afterall. It's been repainted and has no model markings I've found yet. One family member said it was a super 88 but it has the twin slanted wheels in front not the wide track.

Anyhow, the engine turns over great. Haven't started it as I still need to work on the fuel system. I discovered the ignition has no spark. Might just be the old points but while snooping around I found that the wire to the points is hot/powered. I thought on a 12v system the coild negative wire is run to the distributor and the secondary circuit is fired when the points open and break the ground. Maybe there is another way to do it when converting these old tractors to 12v I dunno.

think I might pick up a new coil and the genesee electronic conversion, we'll see.

Good advise about the oil in the cylinders. I didn't see it until after turning the engine over :/

Thanks!

Good advice for any four stroke engine is to turn the engine over by hand (1-1/8 inch deep socket in your case) two full turns before you try the starter. Two full turns will cycle all the events. You may have stuck valves or something. This would keep you from bending push rods, etc. J.

Clutch is on the far left. The others are brakes. Left, right and if there is a pedal connecting them, it is for applying both brakes at same time.. Do what old says, just be sure to take the spark plugs out when you try to turn it over. Look for drain plugs on bottom of transmission and rear end, take them out and let water run out till you get oil and then put them back in. Kind of messy, but you need to get condensation out. Wouldn't worry about changing trans and rear end oil till I got it running. When you get motor turning over( you will be lucky if it's not stuck) then change oil and filter before trying to start it. Clean out fuel system and carb. I would jack up one rear wheel and put in gear and try to turn wheel to get motor turning over. After that long, clutch might be stuck. Good luck, don't be bashfull about asking more questions. Chris

Before you do any thing to them fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and walk away for a week. What that will do is remove rust from the cylinders and free up any stuck rings. Its also good to pour tranny fluid down the exhaust pipe if you can so it will get to the exhaust valves and help free them up
