Well a few weeks ago I ask to buy or un the other way, I bought. I a leak coming from the under my feet, looks like they split off the hydo pump and pick up power steering. It pumps out a fair amount of oil there. Also it is not the fastest to fire off when I start it cold. How much throttle should I give her? I would say it took me 15-20 seconds of crank time before it hit, typical? I need a passenger side battery box, and would guys hook up a two battery system or just one good one like it has now. Any maintence items I should be checking before use? And can I use regular universal hydo fluid to top off the hydraulic res. under the seat. Is any one manual better to buy than another. I was looking at the cd rom version for sale on ebay, if there is books or manuals let me know. I want to try and take the best care of tractor as I can. Thank for any or all answers. You folks helped alot in my choice of tractor, sorry to bother you now with a bunch of dumb questions. Dumbdumb

You might want to check for an air leak into the fuel system. I worked on a 1650 that started hard. It didn't leak fuel out but had some air leaks that allow air in when it was shut down. I replaced some gaskets and fittings and it started like a new tractor. Those types of leaks are the hardest to find because you can't see something leaking out. One sign of this is when it starts harder when it sits for a period of time. His would start hard if it sat for a few hours. I would start checking the generic stuff first such as filters and cloged lines.

If the leak is coming from under your feet, it's either the supply line or the return line for the steering. I had to have one rubber line custom made and the other is just a peice of brake line that goes into the housing. Do you know what year your 1600 is? Or if it's the earlier model or later? Mine is the earlier model, and the steering was updated back in the 70's to the newer one that is in the 2-70 White.

Here's a picture of mine:
third party image The line you see is the supply, and the return goes to the plug that is to the right of the hose, and almost the middle of the picture. If yours has the same block on the front like that, and the filter to the left side (cast thing with the hex head on it, to the right in the picture) it's an earlier model.(62 & early 63) If it's basically the oppostie and the filter is between your feet, it's a later model.(late 63 & 64)

At 60 deg., you shouldn't really need the preheat. I would put a second battery in though. Just isn't enough amperage so it's probably spinning a little too slow, but 20 seconds doesn't sound horrible either (maybe it would if my 1855 took that long)

You won't really do any damage to the starter by not having a second battery in there, but it may overheat if you have it engaged too long and that would damage the starter.

Thanks for the pic and info. I took the floor pan off last night to see where the fluid was coming from. It looks like yours only rigid brake line material. The filer is on the same side. The serial number starts with 14 so I thought it was a 64? I scraped and removed all the dirt oil crust a 1/2 thick and have it clean and ready for repair. The lines don't seem like they leak it seems like it is where the piece with the large hex bolts to the pump housing. And maybe some coming around the large nut as well. I wanted to take it off last night and look but was concerned there could be a procedure involved so I just cleaned. There is also oil coming from up high and running down the dash base, like along where the wheel tilt foot lever is. I was thinking leaking oil pressure line for the idiot light? I am fairly mechanically savy. I have built automotive engines and rebuilt a couple old mustangs so I have a decent clue and understand wrenching just never worked on tractors before. Don thanks again for the pretty pics. Maybe this one will get treated to a repaint someday but for now its got work to do. I would post a pic but I only do the net at work and work is teaching shop classes at school. The school has a block that prevents any posting pics on the web. I can email them but not post on the web, go figure. Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it.

That leak behind the dash is either a powersteering line or the motor itself. Probably a line. The idiot light is just a switch that screws into the block on the left side behind the filter base and tach drive. It has 1 wire that attatches to it, I think it's a blue one if I'm not mistaken. I just had to change out that switch on mine because it was a new one I installed during the rebuild, and it's made out of plastic now so it sprung a leak. I still have the old metal one in case it leaks again. Then that old one is going back in.

wish my 1650 would fire off that quick
two batteries, 1/0(2/0 won't fit right) cable with soldered ends. good ground. use the preheat once you get two batteries in her. Ron

Sounds like a diesel? If so, yes wire up two batteries. Are you using the preheater (I think the 1600s had those)? Should be a button on the dash. Turn the switch on, hold the preheater button down for 20 seconds or so, then try & start it. It makes a big difference on a cold engine.

Yes its a diesel. It has the button on the dash. I thought that was for really cold. Weather, it was maybe 60 out when I picked it up. Do I use it anyway?

That particular problem could be due to it not rolling fast enough, due to,like you said low amperage. Could also be clogged fuel filters or a weak primary fuel pump, not pushing the fuel up through the filters.

I sure made the typo's on that. Guess i can't multi task. I was wondering about what manuals were best as far as good diagrams service and repair information. Is the cd version ok if not which manual is best. On the two battery deal, it currently has only one box so one battery, is this ok or is hard on starters because its low on amps? Hope this post is easier to read. Remember my screen name so keep it simple!
