I am looking a buying a 550 but the guy who owns it doesn't know if the pto works. When the tractor is running it turns but he has never used the pto or know what happens when it is under load. Is there an easy way to tell if it is ok or not?

Just got through with pto rebuild on a Super 55. Best way to check the operation is to hook a brushog to it and cut in some heavy grass or weeds. The lever should "snap in" and the pto should not slip in the heavy cutting. When the lever is in the disengaged position the shaft might still turn with the engine running. This is acceptable. If it slips remove the cover under the clutch housing and look for oil in the housing. If you find oil the pto clutches and seals will need replacing. If it is dry of oil it might just need to be adjusted a little tighter.

Mine did the same thing when I bought it. If you have a later model 550 the pto engagement leve is on the right by your knee. Push forward to engage, pull back to disengage. The Pto may just be 'freewheeling' while disengaged. You should be able to hold it with your hand and stop it if disengaged. The PTO clutchs are supposed to be dry. Sometimes the seal at the transmission will leak and fluid will then get onto the pto clutch plates, they get gummed up and the stick a bit. This was the case with mine and I had the seal replaced. There is a pto inspection cover under the tractor, rectangular with four smalle bolts. It should be dry in there, this is also where you can adjust the PTO clutches.
You need to read the article by Greg Sheppard "Oliver 550 Purchaser Checklist." Very helpful. It is on the left under Research and Info,,, Articles,,, Maintenance and Info. Here's the link.

I would not under any condition want to be the guy who grabs a spinning PTO Shaft!
