here is what I have. Oliver 7 all on 6V with 8V battery. Starter won't turn over. Checked it and the brushes are good, bushings are good. Can take starter off of tractor and it will turn over with 8V battery.

can start with 12 V battery fine. Now I was told that all I have to do is put a 12V battery on it if I don't run the lights. If I do that I need to put a resistor in that line. I was also told by a man who rebuilds generators that if I change the regulator and the coil I am good. Another one said All I have to change is the battery but might have to charge it now and then as the regulator won't let it charge enough.

Put 12V on and the guage shows a discharge instead of a slight charge. Shows a good charge with the 8V battery on it.

Which way can I go here? Also it has 2 guage wires from battery to switch and I think 1 guage from there to starter. Grounded up in battery box, but if I jump from the battery to the starter it still won't turn the starter over unless it is out of the tractor.

8V checks good with battery checker.

Just curious, where do you have that battery grounded? If it's in the original location, not good. You have rust between the tractor main frame and the dash mount. Try grounding right to one of the starter bolts at the bell housing and see what happens.

Has anyone tried the Optima 6V battery? I'm converting from 12V back to 6V. I think it might be just the ticket.....

You wrote: All I have to change is the battery but might have to charge it now and then as the regulator won't let it charge enough.

A lot of posts indicate a shortage of 8v battery chargers.

Old is right about the cables and possibly the starter does need attention. You won't know that unless you fix the leads and then/or get it checked out if needed.

12 volts on a poor starter would not be a good idea.

If the gen man was talking about the ignition coil, he was wrong if he meant fit a new one. Connections may need changing (if polarity is changed) but otherwise all that is needed is a ballast resistor in series with the coil supply.

Lights on 12v - change the bulbs.

I would personally keep it 6V. Worked OK like that for years, didn't it?

Old's right on the money. You need a good size battery cable with a good clean ground. 8 volt is not the answer. Try some good cables first. I know Korves sells a good size cable.....

#1 wrong size battery cables for 6 volt. You need 0 or 00 cables or they will not work. #2 sounds like you have a weak starter. A weak start will some times spin just fine with no load but put a load on and they will not work. I would get the starter checked at an auto parts store and then go from there. By the way an 8 volt battery is a bandaid fix for other problems and cause more problems then worth
