I am also overhauling a 70 and I have my head at the machine shop and the guy says I need new springs, valve guides and seats, and maybe new valves. Is there any way to get some of this stuff cheap or use off another engine? My old valve stems were .373" in diameter and 5.313 in length. The springs were 1.3 OD and 2.25 in length and have 8 coils. I'd appreciate any help.

I don't think your shop is looking too hard. Last I did machine shop work there were all kind of seats and guides that could be used. I am the sub over in the ag diesel program at the local Career center this week and we have a 1937 head off of a 70 to redo. They have it cleaned up today and will be measuring everything tomorrow.

Do it properly. IF parts are not available one can resort to sleeving guides or boring and fitting bigger vales (stem diameter). Making new guides is not difficult. Valve-heads can be welded to build them up. Springs need to be the correct rating, as well as size. Your call. Pretty labour intensive when making modifications like above and if new parts can be found, that is generally the better way to go, I would think.
