I was @ the Ottawa Kansas summer show that featured Oliver this past weekend. There was a nicely restored 37 Oliver Special there. It looked like a 28-44 with lights and starter. The Serial # plate did not include a model of any kind--just a serial #. How many of these did they make and was this the predecessor to the 90/99?

I have a photo of the tractor that I will post tomorrow.  The tractor was restored in every detail.  It is my understanding that the 28 44 was designed to run on tractor fuel and the Special was designed to run on gas with a higher compression cylinder head.

What you say is true. That tractor was not tested in Nebraska, but in Oliver advertising they rated the high compression specal as a 32 - 50.

Wasn't "Special" short for Threserman's Special? I had the understanding the modifications you mentioned were for operating larger threshing machines of the day. You sure don't see very many.

Somewhere in some of my notes on those models it was mentioned that the 28/44 special either was to be or actually was rated ats a 32-50.

The 28-44 special also had a four speed transmisson instead of the three speed. I have been told the thresherman special had heavier rear cast centers.

The "Special" at Ottawa was the "High Compression Special". The "Thresherman's Special" was something else. The Thresherman would have had heavy cast wheels and a whistle. Most of the whistles have disappeared by now though.
