I have an hg-48 with an IXB3 engine it has been converted to 12 volt and the magneto has been changed to a fairbanks morse j4b3. It has a regular 12volt coil like off an old car.The problem I have is the coil is arching out across the terminals anyone help me with this and where does the coil wire go off the primary on the coil I am confused with this setup????? ????? ?

The mag is being used as a distributor, just like in any distributor system (typical old car). Nothing unusual. Generating side of mag may have gone bad, or may not, but has been bypassed, so power for the sparks is being supplied from the battery/charging circuit instead of from the mag system.

clean the cap the best you can to get rid of the carbon tracks
the coil wires to the hot side of the switch with the grounded side going to the points in the mag.
or you can send the mag out to a good rebuilder and do away with the external coil

It should not have a coil on it, a mag doesn't need it. A mag isn't connected to the electrical system, 6V or 12V. A mag will just have the 4 spark plug wires and a small wire that, when grounded via a switch, will kill the engine.

Sometimes a distributor ignition off another engine ends up on old HGs. It sounds like your machine may have had a distributor at one time in it's past.
